ScreamQueenz: Reborn - SAINT DROGO (2023)

You Can't Keep a Good ScreamQueenz Down...

For one episode only, ScreamQueenz: Where Horror Gets gay is REBORN!

I promised when I retired that if a movie gets released that is gayer and scarier than anything I've ever covered, I would return to talk to you about it.

SAINT DROGO is that movie.

SAINT DROGO is currently only available on Blu-Ray from monstermakeup.llc for $25. Support Independent Queer Horror and order your copy now.

In the bleak, off-season shadows of Provincetown, a couple's stagnant relationship takes a dark turn. What begins as an impromptu escape to Provincetown quickly spirals into a nightmare when one partner grows obsessed with finding an ex who mysteriously vanished after the summer in this surreal Lovecraftian story of dread and betrayal.

My special guest for this special episode is the fabulous DAN DOMINGUES (Hot Date with Dan & Vicky, Vex Voom in the 21st Century)

Please be advised that since SAINT DROGO is new and currently only available on Blu-Ray, this episode includes a SPOILER BREAK if you don't want to have the ending revealed.

SAINT DROGO stars Michael J. Ahern, Brandon Perras-Sanchez, Matthew Pidge, Michael McAdam, Christian Matyi and Tradd Sanderson.

Speaker:

I'm back, bitches. Well, well, well. Hello again, my beautiful screamers,

Speaker:

and welcome to the very first episode of ScreamQueenz Reborn. This

Speaker:

is episode one, and tonight we. We're going to talk about a movie

Speaker:

that's so damn good, I came back from the dead for it. And that

Speaker:

movie is Saint Drogo by those crazy boys over at Monster Makeup.

Speaker:

The same folks who brought you Death Drop Gorgeous are back with

Speaker:

a bit of queer folk horror that's so frightening it'll make

Speaker:

your hair stand on it, and it might even give you a boner. And

Speaker:

in order to make this occasion truly momentous, I am joined by fabulous

Speaker:

world famous actor Dan Domingues. But before we do any of

Speaker:

that, please allow me to reintroduce myself and hello, my

Speaker:

name is Patrick Walsh, and once upon a time I was the host of

Speaker:

ScreamQueenz, the podcast where horror gets gay. But I retired.

Speaker:

I was there for 17 years. But now I'm back for one night only.

Speaker:

One night only. That's all you're going to get. Because I warned

Speaker:

you, when a movie came along that was so damn good, I absolutely

Speaker:

had to talk about it, I would rise from the dead, and here I am.

Speaker:

So now you got to deal with me. Yeah, but Patrick, what's been

Speaker:

going on at ScreamQueenz headquarters since last July when

Speaker:

you left us? First of all, I didn't leave you. I just.

Speaker:

Never.

Speaker:

Behindmind. We're not getting into that. Aside from the world outside

Speaker:

going to hell, things at ScreamQueenz headquarters have been

Speaker:

surprisingly good. Retiring the show was the best move I could

Speaker:

have made. I feel so much better than I did then without the

Speaker:

constant stress of having to put out a show every week. The Brain

Speaker:

Fog. I couldn't tell you the last time I've had a brain fog incident.

Speaker:

And because I found that the best weapon against that brain fog

Speaker:

was going to the gym every single day, I become a huge gym bunny

Speaker:

and a Zumba queen. Not only is my brain working more clearly, I'm

Speaker:

also looking, as the kids would say, snatched. Win, Win. Damn

Speaker:

you. Uncle Lewis is up and running publicly now, which is awesome.

Speaker:

It came in the 70s, about to start running again, and about to

Speaker:

start doing interviews for our upcoming new show, behind the Screamz,

Speaker:

where I talk to queer horror filmmakers about what's going on.

Speaker:

I'm interviewing Roger Connors next month to talk about his gay

Speaker:

slasher movie, Meet. So things are going well on that front. So

Speaker:

yay to better health and yay to happier workspaces. But here's

Speaker:

the ironic thing. You know how I've said on the old ScreamQueenz,

Speaker:

I used to say many, many times that one of my favorite horror tropes

Speaker:

is a house full of rich, eccentric cunts that all secretly

Speaker:

hate each other. Being stuck in a house waiting for. A will to

Speaker:

be read, and they. Kill each other off one by one. Well, I'm stuck

Speaker:

in that scenario for real right now because as many of you

Speaker:

know, my dad passed away in January, and that was very sad. But

Speaker:

the whole thing with his will has been dragging on for a really

Speaker:

long time now. And I'm seeing the truly ugly side of my family

Speaker:

members. And I wasn't in a good space with them anyway. But

Speaker:

not to see them as all as money hungry, grubby, icky people.

Speaker:

It's just been a real eye opener. And let's just say the trope

Speaker:

is not so much fun when you're living it. But hopefully that will

Speaker:

be over soon. But pretty much that's all I got is secret ninja

Speaker:

boots is here. She says I'm fabulous, but that's classified.

Speaker:

Don't tell anybody. But most of all, I'm happy to be sitting here

Speaker:

with you right here, right now. Because I've said this before.

Speaker:

I'll probably say 15 times more in this episode. I waited for

Speaker:

so long for Saint Drogo to get released. I kept ScreamQueenz running

Speaker:

for months longer than I should have going, maybe they'll

Speaker:

release it this month. Maybe the release this because I needed

Speaker:

to talk about it with you, because this movie, so damn good.

Speaker:

But it's finally happening now. But here's the trick, kids.

Speaker:

As you know, I can't talk about a movie without spoiling it.

Speaker:

Not the way I need to talk about it. Because the movie, this

Speaker:

movie's got a lot going on in the best way possible. There's layers

Speaker:

and layers upon layers of things going on. Stuff that's on

Speaker:

the surface, it's the way deep into beneath the surface. And that's

Speaker:

what makes it so damn good. But in order to do that, I'm gonna

Speaker:

have to spoil it. But the problem is, everybody, it's not a

Speaker:

problem. It's a chance. It's not a hurt. It's not a challenge.

Speaker:

It's a hurdle. It's not a hurdle. It's an obstacle. It's. It's

Speaker:

a thing. Here's the thing, kids. It's not streaming anywhere.

Speaker:

The folks over at Monster Makeup LLC decided to release the

Speaker:

movie independently rather than go to the usual avenues. So

Speaker:

right now, it's only available on Blu Ray for purchase at monstermakeupllc.com

Speaker:

for the low, low price of just $25. And when I tell you that this

Speaker:

movie is worth every penny, I mean it from the bottom. Not affiliated

Speaker:

with Monster Makeup in any way, shape or form. And they are

Speaker:

not giving me any money to hype up this film. This is me hyping

Speaker:

up this film for you. This is how excited I am about this movie

Speaker:

for you. I came back from the dead because I needed to tell you

Speaker:

about how great this movie is and to get more eyes on it. So I

Speaker:

am imploring you, support independent horror and go buy Saint

Speaker:

Drogo on Blu Ray right now. I put the link right down there in

Speaker:

the show notes. You have no excuses. I know you're excited to

Speaker:

hear me, but by all means, if you can wait a little bit longer,

Speaker:

get that Blu Ray for us, because you will not be disappointed.

Speaker:

It's scary as hell. It's sexy as hell, it's freaky as hell. And

Speaker:

it's gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay, gay. But here's the thing, kids.

Speaker:

I know times are tough. I know things are hard. I know blind buys

Speaker:

are a hard thing to do. You gotta feel it or you don't. I still

Speaker:

am giving you an out in this episode. Dan and I are going to talk

Speaker:

all the way up to the finale of Saint Drogo. And then we're going

Speaker:

to stop and we're going to say, hey, this would be a good time.

Speaker:

If you don't want to find out the secret of Saint Drogo, you need

Speaker:

to stop listening right about now. And we're going to wrap up the

Speaker:

show. And if you dare to go beyond that point, we will discuss

Speaker:

the ending of the film. Because, oh, my gosh, the end of

Speaker:

the film has to be discussed in some way, shape or form. So if

Speaker:

you don't want that ruined, you can either buy the DVD or not

Speaker:

listen to the end of the show. The choice is yours. But you got

Speaker:

to make the choice right now, because it's time for me to start

Speaker:

the show. Bring on Dan Domingues and play the trailer for

Speaker:

Saint Drogo. Hallelujah. He is risen.

Speaker:

Got a package.

Speaker:

Hey, it's Caleb. Had this really bizarre dream about you the

Speaker:

other night. Let's get away for a few days.

Speaker:

Can I help you boys with something?

Speaker:

I really don't want to spend this entire trip looking for your

Speaker:

ex.

Speaker:

I'm looking for a friend of mine.

Speaker:

There's no use searching for him now.

Speaker:

Wait, what?

Speaker:

What if we file the missing persons or something?

Speaker:

Addicts Go missing all the time. They go camping in the dunes.

Speaker:

Their bodies show up in the spring.

Speaker:

Since we've gotten here, I fell off.

Speaker:

You're leaving out of bed at five in the morning because of some

Speaker:

dream you had?

Speaker:

You're scared.

Speaker:

What is it about this place?

Speaker:

Boys come, they get caught in the tide

Speaker:

You are more than welcome here. After all, this is a. A party.

Speaker:

Leave, leave alone.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna go without you.

Speaker:

Hail Saint Srogo Hail Saint Drogo

Speaker:

When ScreamQueenz podcast Where Horror Get Gay was wrapping

Speaker:

up, I had a short list of films that were still on the festival

Speaker:

circuit that I was really holding out. I said, please, please

Speaker:

get released before I have to retire so I can cover you. And they

Speaker:

didn't, those bastards, not a single one of them. But one of the

Speaker:

stipulations I said to myself when I retired from ScreamQueenz

Speaker:

Because I said, when these movies get. Released, I am going

Speaker:

to bring the show back and I will cover them. I will bring ScreamQueenz

Speaker:

back from the dead. And here I am arisen for you tonight. Because

Speaker:

tonight's movie, Saint Drogo, is one of those films. And since

Speaker:

it's a very special film and it's not your average queer horror

Speaker:

film, I needed somebody who really understands the film business.

Speaker:

And who better? Who better been everybody's favorite dimple

Speaker:

leading man, the fabulous Dan Domingues. Dan Domingues, welcome

Speaker:

back to Scream. Please welcome back to ScreamQueenzReborn.

Speaker:

Thank you. Patrick, you look. Your reborn self looks gorgeous.

Speaker:

Well, I still got all my own. Placenta all over my face.

Speaker:

Keep it, keep it. Find some more placentas, keep spreading it,

Speaker:

because we are pulling you out of retirement to. For. Yeah. Thank

Speaker:

you so much for having me. It's a thrill to see you. It's a

Speaker:

thrill to be here and a thrill to be able to talk about this film.

Speaker:

Dan Domingues, it has been a long time since you've been here.

Speaker:

What have you been up to? Where have you been?

Speaker:

I have been all over the place. I have moved out of New York

Speaker:

City. I am living in New Jersey. My life has taken so many

Speaker:

different turns. I have been traveling for work a lot. I have

Speaker:

a new person in my life. And yeah, there's just been, you know,

Speaker:

I went through a breakup three years ago and it sort of upended

Speaker:

my life. But I'm, you know, and I was together with this person

Speaker:

for 21 years. And so as you can imagine, it took a long time

Speaker:

to sort of get back on my feet. But, but, but here I am. Here

Speaker:

I am, here you are.

Speaker:

You're still standing still. Just like Elaine Stretch, you're

Speaker:

still here. God bless you. Very glad to have you back.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

You have not been here since Devil Dog, the Hound of Hell. And

Speaker:

that was a thousand years ago.

Speaker:

It was. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

All right, so.

Speaker:

Damn.

Speaker:

You know what? It still screamed Queens. Even though we're

Speaker:

back from the dead,. The traditions still stand. Dan Domingues,

Speaker:

I need you to make up for the lost time that you were not here

Speaker:

and give me a nice, tight 30 second plot summary of the film.

Speaker:

Saint Drogo. The clock starts now.

Speaker:

Caleb and Adrian are a couple who are experiencing some problems.

Speaker:

They're both having this terrifying nightmare of Caleb's ex

Speaker:

dying violently on a beach in P Town. So they decide to take a

Speaker:

vacation to P Town, both to rekindle their relationship, but

Speaker:

also to track down what happened to Caleb's ex. Because he's

Speaker:

there. He sent a message that he's staying for the entire season.

Speaker:

And so they show up in P Town. It's bleak, it's cold, it's winter.

Speaker:

And there are. And secrets abound. So they're trying to discover

Speaker:

the truth and they find some things that maybe they didn't want

Speaker:

to.

Speaker:

Yes. Curiosity kills the cats.

Speaker:

Oh, my gosh. It kills a lot of things.

Speaker:

Things? These cats are dead.

Speaker:

Well, no, not a lot of things. There's not a big body count in this

Speaker:

movie we should see.

Speaker:

No, there's not.

Speaker:

But the people who are dead are.

Speaker:

Really, really, really dead.

Speaker:

They're really dead.

Speaker:

I would say for my shady 30 second summary, Wicker Man. But everybody's

Speaker:

gay.

Speaker:

That's a good one. Everybody is gay. Everyone in this. Well, it's

Speaker:

in P Town, so everyone is going. Is bound to be gay. Yeah,

Speaker:

that's a good one. The Wicker Wicker man immediately sprung to

Speaker:

mind as I was watching this.

Speaker:

percentfolkhorror100 perecent.It's. It's spitting its

Speaker:

own mythology, which is fun. Which is always nice when you see.

Speaker:

When you come across something that's truly original like this.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's a little bit Wicker Man. It's a little bit Lovecraftian.

Speaker:

A little bit like shadow over Innismeth.

Speaker:

Yeah, Dagon.

Speaker:

Dagon and I. I've said on the show before, like when I covered

Speaker:

the fog and when we covered Dead & Buried I love a movie about

Speaker:

a coastal town with a dirty little secret.

Speaker:

One of my favorite things hits hit. My G. Well, should I say hits

Speaker:

my G spot. It hits my.

Speaker:

You already said it. It's already. It's already Been hit. It's

Speaker:

been hit. 10. It's been hit.

Speaker:

It hits my movie G spot. I love a movie set in not in. Not just

Speaker:

a seaside town, but somewhere isolated, somewhere cold. Right.

Speaker:

Not a lot of people around. There's a. There was a movie from

Speaker:

a couple of years ago called Off Season. I'm not sure if you've

Speaker:

seen that. I think it's on shudder, but has that sort of same

Speaker:

vibe. Yeah. I love the mood, the atmosphere in a place like that.

Speaker:

It's like, ripe for horror and suspense.

Speaker:

And just to double down on what you were saying. And it's not

Speaker:

just that it's an isolated, deserted, creepy town. It's not always

Speaker:

during the summer. It's a Mecca. It's paradise. It's gay heaven.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But not now. Not now. No, not now. One of the things I love about

Speaker:

it is that I mentioned that these are the same folks who did

Speaker:

Death Job. Gorgeous. This movie looks, feels, sounds, acts,

Speaker:

runs. Nothing like that Job or you would never think it was the

Speaker:

same people. No.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Who made the film.

Speaker:

The two tones are completely different. The filmmaking, cinematography.

Speaker:

I would even go as far as saying, obviously the performances

Speaker:

are. It's a completely different sort of approach and style.

Speaker:

Yeah. If you saw these. If you. If you saw these siloed, you

Speaker:

wouldn't probably be able to tell that it was the same filmmakers.

Speaker:

Yeah. The added plus is if you see both movies, watch this one and

Speaker:

try to figure out who's who of drag.

Speaker:

Yeah. These filmmakers are creating their repertoire of actors.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

They've got their stable when they're on the show. I joked. I imagine

Speaker:

I've always pictured ABBA and the Human League. ABBA and the Human

Speaker:

League. I kind of always pictured them all sleeping in the

Speaker:

same bed like the grandparents from Charlie and the Chocolate factoy

Speaker:

I kind of picture everybody from this company do the same thing.

Speaker:

Because they all know each other.

Speaker:

They all. They all do everything. Yeah. Like, if he knows.

Speaker:

Everybody wrote this. Everybody directed. The people who

Speaker:

wrote and directed are acting in it. So everybody's doing everything.

Speaker:

Three directors. I didn't realize that until after I watched.

Speaker:

Watched it, that three people directed this movie. First of all,

Speaker:

how does that happen? How do you do that on a set? And then second

Speaker:

of all, watching this movie, it seems so consistent. You wouldn't

Speaker:

imagine that three people directed this. It seems like one

Speaker:

person's vision. So they must know each other. I mean, you met

Speaker:

them. They must like Simpatico. They must know each other

Speaker:

really well.

Speaker:

Yes. That's why I pictured the Whole big bed. They're way too simpatico.

Speaker:

They're beyond simpatico. There's some like that happens in

Speaker:

this movie too.

Speaker:

We'll talk about it.

Speaker:

You know what?

Speaker:

There's a lot of people to get to simpatico Yeah. Okay. But yeah,

Speaker:

the writers and the directors are also the main actors. So Adrian,

Speaker:

Caleb and also the boss from the first segment of the film. All

Speaker:

right. I don't want to go plot by plot point, but sure. Dan, Walk

Speaker:

me through the cold open. Walk me through this opening scene. Drop

Speaker:

me into the world of Saint Drogo.

Speaker:

Well, the movie, the movie starts really strong. It drops us

Speaker:

into what we discover is a nightmare. One of the characters

Speaker:

is having a nightmare or is it? Well, yeah, we don't know. It's

Speaker:

a scene that will also replicate itself later, but it's

Speaker:

a guy on a beach and there's a guy on a beach and then there's a

Speaker:

guy in a cloak and the guy on the beach dies violently. Self inflicted

Speaker:

wound dies violently. And then, you know, we are at their,

Speaker:

you know, we're in their bedroom when we realize that it's

Speaker:

a dream. So it's a pretty strong opening. Very strong opening.

Speaker:

And I do love a strong opening. No, but no, 100%.

Speaker:

Once the movie started, I'm like, we are not in the club scene

Speaker:

from the last move. We are not in a happy place. We are not in it.

Speaker:

This, this is not gonna be camp. This is totally different.

Speaker:

Even the atonal music. Yeah, just the open, that long opening

Speaker:

shot of just this glaring winter sun blinding you is. Is incredible.

Speaker:

And then this guy, he's gutting himself.

Speaker:

Long, long loving shot of this guy cutting himself and just letting

Speaker:

everything flop. With this creepy figure just standing behind.

Speaker:

Him and watching you put a guy in a hooded. What do you call that?

Speaker:

Like a hooded shroud or whatever it is immediately creepy.

Speaker:

Right? And then what is it called when someone cuts their guts

Speaker:

out? Is that. Is that self immolation or is what. It's disembowelment.

Speaker:

Disembowelment, yes. Self immolation is setting yourself on

Speaker:

fire. And we should say the special effects, the disembowelment.

Speaker:

Really good. Really good. Very convincing. Very gross. So very upset.

Speaker:

Very.

Speaker:

And broad daylight.

Speaker:

Broad daylight. Daylight. So there's nowhere to hide for these

Speaker:

either. So it's a very strong opening. You have my attention.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely. On a beach, a place that is usually a, you know,

Speaker:

a fun place, a place of safety, A place where getting sun

Speaker:

and they give us this really graphic image. Yeah. What I love

Speaker:

too is that this scene is so upsetting. I. I screened it for my

Speaker:

movie folks here that we lost people immediately. Some people,

Speaker:

like, you know what? This is not for me. I'm out.

Speaker:

I'm out. Because they're expect. Wait, I'm out! Because they

Speaker:

expect the whole movie is going to be like this. I can't do

Speaker:

this. The whole movie's not like that. But the threat of that

Speaker:

hangs over the whole movie. This feeling of dread like that could

Speaker:

happen at any moment.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

Anytime . This is what we can do.

Speaker:

You knew there's another shoe, right?

Speaker:

When are we going to do it?

Speaker:

Will we come?

Speaker:

We're going to do it. Yeah. Yeah. So you wait. You spend the

Speaker:

whole movie waiting for the other shoe to drop. And when it does,

Speaker:

it drops on. So tell me about Caleb and Adrian. Tell me about them.

Speaker:

Tell me about the boys.

Speaker:

Well, visually, the film gives us their relationship right at the

Speaker:

beginning. Right? Like we see them lying in bed, but they're completely

Speaker:

separate. They're not touching, they're not spooning, they're

Speaker:

not cuddling. They're not even draping one arm over each other.

Speaker:

And so visually, without any, any dialogue, we get an immediate

Speaker:

sense of where their relationship is at.

Speaker:

Actually, Dan, I'm gonna have to correct you here because the first

Speaker:

time we see Caleb and Adrian is in a framed photo. Not when they're

Speaker:

in the bed. The very first time we see them, they're in. It's

Speaker:

a framed photo of them. They're smiling, they're happy, they're

Speaker:

embracing. The sun is shining. It's the perfect photo of the perfect

Speaker:

couple. And then, smash. We cut to them in the bed in real time.

Speaker:

They're facing away from each other in the dark with like a foot

Speaker:

of space between them. It's completely opposite of what we just.

Speaker:

Saw in the photo. It's like, this is where we were, but this is

Speaker:

where we are. This is the fantasy we put out. To the world,

Speaker:

but this is the actual reality. And I know, okay, it seems

Speaker:

like. A minor point, but for me it's. An example of the excellent

Speaker:

use of non verbal storytelling that we get constantly throughout

Speaker:

the film. Throughout the whole movie. Dialogue is used sparsely

Speaker:

and it's used well. And they're able to pull it off because

Speaker:

so much is being told without words. Moments like this, because

Speaker:

we learn everything about these two as a couple in a matter

Speaker:

of seconds without a word being spoken. And I think that's

Speaker:

really neat. Please continue, Dan. Tell me more about Caleb and

Speaker:

Adrian.

Speaker:

They're distant, they're not connecting. They're both in a way,

Speaker:

you know, financially a little bit unstable. Their jobs, you know.

Speaker:

I think Adrian has just started a new job after being unemployed

Speaker:

for a long time. Caleb is a tattoo artist, I believe, but is.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think so. I'm not sure it was that.

Speaker:

It wasn't totally clear.

Speaker:

It wasn't super clear, but that's the. Same impression I got.

Speaker:

So I guess there must be visual storytelling that told us

Speaker:

that this movie's very good at the visual story, the non verbal

Speaker:

storytelling.

Speaker:

It's great. Yeah. I mean he's drawing on a pad, he's drawing pictures

Speaker:

and then he's covered in tattoos. So I thought he was a tattoo

Speaker:

artist. And he's like putting clients off, rescheduling clients.

Speaker:

So the two of them, they're just not connecting. And we get a

Speaker:

lot of visual cues to that, which is really smart filmmaking.

Speaker:

Like you don't. We don't have to have all the friggin dialogue

Speaker:

about. I'm mad at you, I'm pissed at you. It's. Yeah, it's great.

Speaker:

What are you doing?

Speaker:

Having a beer.

Speaker:

Yeah, I see that. We have dinner plans. Remember we reminded

Speaker:

you yesterday. Oh my God.

Speaker:

Can you just go without me?

Speaker:

I'm not gonna go without you. We've postponed this dinner date

Speaker:

for like months now.

Speaker:

Well, maybe they should take a hint.

Speaker:

Can you please just come, Adrian?

Speaker:

Honestly, I'm pretty beat.

Speaker:

You're pretty beat?

Speaker:

Must be real taxing doodling on a sketch pad in your underwear.

Speaker:

One of the things that appreciate that. I appreciate about

Speaker:

both films and I have Dan to watch Death Drop Gorgeous as well,

Speaker:

so. And he didn't finish the whole thing because he wasn't feeling

Speaker:

well and that's okay. But one of the things that the strongest

Speaker:

things about both of these films for me is that how unapologetically

Speaker:

gay they are. Yeah, I watch enough queer horror films and you

Speaker:

know, queer films in general,. There always seems to be this sense.

Speaker:

That we're look how normal we are. There always seems to be like

Speaker:

many. Of them try to appease a straight audience, try to make the

Speaker:

Straits feel comfortable, but neither one of these movies do that.

Speaker:

They drop you into these situations and just say no, it's

Speaker:

gay. Deal with it. Right? This couple, they're going to have a threesome

Speaker:

with a stranger they just picked up and they're going to do

Speaker:

drugs. And it's not going to be a. Big deal because that's how

Speaker:

it is in our community. If you have a Problem with it. Other movies

Speaker:

would make. They have to fight about it a long time and it would

Speaker:

ruin their relationship later on. No, we're just going to drop

Speaker:

this in. It happens because it happens. Yeah. Warts and all approach

Speaker:

to gay community, which I. Which I appreciated.

Speaker:

Yeah. I. I thought in Death Drop, gorgeous as. As insanely over

Speaker:

the top. It is the way they dealt with, you know, online culture,

Speaker:

how people connect on the apps. I mean, ageism. Yeah, ageism.

Speaker:

A lot of that rang true to me. And so these guys know what they're

Speaker:

talking about and. Yeah, I just loved. I loved in this film

Speaker:

how the relationship is just treated as any other relationship,

Speaker:

but that we also get to see the issues that plague spec. Gay

Speaker:

relationships.

Speaker:

I love. Yeah. Sorry.

Speaker:

No, no, no, it's. Yeah, I think you're totally right.

Speaker:

I love that they're not the perfect couple. They're not perfect.

Speaker:

They're problematic from the beginning, but we don't hate them

Speaker:

for it either. We don't hate either one of them. We see both of

Speaker:

them are problems, but we don't. We don't turn on them.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I mean, we. We kind of, as the movie goes on because someone's very,

Speaker:

very stubborn. But that's the way things. This is. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

Things got to play out.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I also like that these two guys would not be played by these

Speaker:

two guys in most other gay films. It'd be skinny, hairless dudes.

Speaker:

I loved these two guys. I thought they were so cute.

Speaker:

Aren't they great? Aren't they great? Hi, Brandon. Hi, Mikey.

Speaker:

They're so you can please let them know. I thought they were so

Speaker:

handsome. I mean, but you're right, they're handsome, but they're

Speaker:

relatable. And they are. I don't know. I also bought these two

Speaker:

as a couple, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, what, have they been together a year? I think it says

Speaker:

in the film. I think they say in the film or something like that,

Speaker:

but I'm not sure. But I totally bought them as a couple.

Speaker:

Couple. But I thought they were cute as buttons.

Speaker:

100%.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah. I just want these crazy kids to make it. I.

Speaker:

Come on.

Speaker:

one of the things I enjoy too

Speaker:

On the second watch, what the movie is hinging on is this whole

Speaker:

nightmare that Caleb wakes up for.

Speaker:

Actually. Turns out they both have the same nightmare, right? Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, both of them have the same nightmare. Oh, just for clarification,

Speaker:

the nightmare that they're both having is the scene that we

Speaker:

saw at the beginning with the man gutting himself ritualistically

Speaker:

on the Beach. And it's only now that we're learning just who

Speaker:

that man is. Or was. Whatever. Please continue.

Speaker:

You okay?

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just having this really weird dream in

Speaker:

P town, actually. Or maybe I'm just thinking about P town because

Speaker:

you mentioned it earlier.

Speaker:

Well, what happens in the dream?

Speaker:

I don't really remember. Some of the details are kind of fuzzy

Speaker:

now, but Isaac is there.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

Is he on a beach?

Speaker:

Yeah. How did you know that?

Speaker:

I think we might be having the same dream. No, no, honestly, hear

Speaker:

me out. Isaac's on a beach. He's digging through some seaweed.

Speaker:

This is a guy in a cloak.

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

I'm kind of worried about him.

Speaker:

Caleb, it was a dream. He's fine.

Speaker:

I haven't heard from him in a month. He's not responding to any

Speaker:

of my texts.

Speaker:

Didn't he just send you a photo of himself?

Speaker:

He said he was staying in P town through the off season.

Speaker:

Is this why you wanted to go to P Town? Because Isaac is having

Speaker:

too much fun to respond to your texts?

Speaker:

When I brought up P Town, I didn't have Isaac in mind. Okay,

Speaker:

but don't you think it's a little weird that we're having the

Speaker:

same dream?

Speaker:

Okay, yes, it's weird. We had similar dreams. You're a sucker for

Speaker:

this shit, Caleb. You think everything is a sign.

Speaker:

Okay, but what happens in your dream?

Speaker:

I told you. Don't remember. You can go back to your fantasy about

Speaker:

Isaac and go take a Valium.

Speaker:

Who's the guy in the dream?

Speaker:

The guy in the dream is Caleb's ex, right? Yeah. What is

Speaker:

his name? I forgot the character's name already.

Speaker:

Isaac.

Speaker:

Isaac, Right, right.

Speaker:

Yeah. And coincidentally that morning, Caleb receives a package

Speaker:

in the mail from Isaac. Dried up roses and a picture. And that's

Speaker:

it?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So now he's got Isaac on the brain and he's realizing that he

Speaker:

hasn't seen Isaac in a long time. I haven't spoken to Isaac.

Speaker:

I don't know where he is or. Or how he is. And now this package

Speaker:

is cryptic.

Speaker:

There's no note.

Speaker:

What the fuck does it mean? And on top of it, now I'm dreaming

Speaker:

of Isaac killing himself. I need to get in touch with Isaac now.

Speaker:

Hey, it's Caleb. I got your picture and flowers in the mail today.

Speaker:

Next time just send a postcard. You're weird. Know. Anyways,

Speaker:

I haven't heard from you in a while and had this really bizarre

Speaker:

dream about you the other night and just wanted to check in

Speaker:

and what's this about you staying in P Town over the winter?

Speaker:

Yeah, give me a call when you get this. I hope you're okay. Bye.

Speaker:

Let's go to P Town and see what's up. So everything's revolving

Speaker:

around this trip to P Town. What's P Town?

Speaker:

Oh, Provincetown, Massachusetts. It's like. It's a

Speaker:

resort town that in the summer explodes well, in many ways.

Speaker:

Internally and externally.

Speaker:

It is a gay mecca. A lot of gay men go and live in P Town. I've

Speaker:

been to P Town several times. But it should also be said that when

Speaker:

I've been there, a lot of families are there, a lot of people

Speaker:

from Boston, a lot of people from other cities in Massachusetts.

Speaker:

So it is. It is a resorty family, but also very, very gay.

Speaker:

You know, it's like. It's like Fire island, just a little bit more

Speaker:

diverse, I would say.

Speaker:

It's. It's definitely a queer, queer run economy.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

That. That's where. That's where the money's coming from. Without

Speaker:

the gay community making it a resort. Yeah. The other people wouldn't

Speaker:

be there, but anyway. But what was fun to watch on a second time.

Speaker:

I'd forgotten, like, when the movie was over the first time. I'm

Speaker:

shocked by the whole ending, the whole story and everything. I've

Speaker:

forgotten the stuff that happens before they go on the trip.

Speaker:

I loved all the setup stuff. Yeah. Where do you get to meet the

Speaker:

sets of Friends? The shitty gay friend. Like I was saying, it

Speaker:

was gorgeous.

Speaker:

We've already booked again for next year.

Speaker:

Extended our stay too.

Speaker:

We'll be gone most of July.

Speaker:

That is so awesome.

Speaker:

You both went away this summer too, right?

Speaker:

Nope.

Speaker:

Yeah, I got hired at the beginning of the summer, so unfortunately

Speaker:

I couldn't take any time off.

Speaker:

Oh, that's right. How is it not being on fun employment anymore?

Speaker:

Well, Adrian's paying right now.

Speaker:

It's really great. I love my new job. I seriously couldn't be

Speaker:

happier.

Speaker:

Well, there's always next year. .

Speaker:

The other thing that I think is Great about this movie, that it's

Speaker:

an hour and 20 minutes and nothing is filler. No, very little

Speaker:

filler in this. It's. It's very streamlined. It's really well

Speaker:

paced. We get hints in the beginning that, you know, Adrian

Speaker:

is flirting with. Is it. Is it his boss, a co worker? Yes, that's.

Speaker:

It's his boss, Ryan Miller, who's the other writer. Director.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And again, they make a cute couple too. Oh,

Speaker:

my gosh. I would be very happy to watch the make out for a while,

Speaker:

but we don't get to see that. But it's fine. Whatever we got planned

Speaker:

the sequel. It was fun to revisit all this. Stuff with the

Speaker:

shitty gay friends because. It turns out all the dialogue is important.

Speaker:

It all is echoing stuff that will come up and be important later.

Speaker:

Ye ah,it's all. It's all great stuff.

Speaker:

There's no wasted. Yeah. There's no excess. There's no, like.

Speaker:

Like you said, there's no filler. They've trimmed the fat off

Speaker:

this story so that it's. It's both. It's both complex and simple

Speaker:

at the same time. And. And what they're saying are things I've

Speaker:

said in relationships. Right. It just seems very, very. It all

Speaker:

seems very grounded and very real.

Speaker:

What, do you hang out with those guys?

Speaker:

I don't know. We've been friends since college. They're really

Speaker:

not that bad.

Speaker:

Adrian, they're so fucking basic. They bragged about their vacation

Speaker:

for, like, over 30 minutes.

Speaker:

Well, I'm sorry. All my friends aren't artistic prodigies.

Speaker:

All my friends aren't artists.

Speaker:

Seriously, the number of pretentious art openings you brought

Speaker:

me to, all those ambient noise rock shows, and I never say a peep,

Speaker:

but the moment I ask. You to accompany me to dinner with. My friends,

Speaker:

it always has to be a production.

Speaker:

Where is this coming from?

Speaker:

Did you really have to bring up the rent thing?

Speaker:

What do you mean?

Speaker:

I mean, in front of them. Did you have to tell them that,.

Speaker:

Oh, my God, who cares?

Speaker:

And then blaming me for us not going on vacation.

Speaker:

Well, I mean, that is kind of your fault.

Speaker:

I know. I know. It's my fault all the time. I'm sorry.

Speaker:

Yeah, they do. They do say the word fuck a alot.They. There's a

Speaker:

lot of fucks In this movie.

Speaker:

It's not a. It's not a Rob Zombie level of fucks But is high

Speaker:

on the fuckometer

Speaker:

There is a high level of. Of. Of adding the word fuck in the middle

Speaker:

of. In Of. Of sentences.

Speaker:

I'm very sensitive. I. I'm not offended by it, but when words get

Speaker:

repeated a lot, I do want to say "buy a thesarus". It didn't strike

Speaker:

me, or maybe getting jaded, but like, rob. Rob Zombie. I want

Speaker:

to buy us the stars. But come on, Come on. Do better. Do better.

Speaker:

Anyway, in any other. In any other, like, in it, like a Rob Zombie

Speaker:

movie, you're like, that's lazy writing. Why. Why do you have

Speaker:

to add so many in this one? I noticed it, but also the emotions

Speaker:

are High in this, in this film. Like, so I buy it. I buy it.

Speaker:

Yeah. And, and crazy happens. So. Yeah. And the reason I, I, I

Speaker:

say it's got a Wicker man vibe is that that Caleb's drive to find

Speaker:

his ex, somebody describes it as. It's like you're a hound who's

Speaker:

got the scent.

Speaker:

Look, once we get this car fixed, we're going back to the city,

Speaker:

okay? I'm over this.

Speaker:

Adrian, Listen, since we've gotten here, I fell off like the

Speaker:

second we rolled into town. It's feel like there's this awful

Speaker:

thing just hovering around me and I can't get rid of it.

Speaker:

You're like a hound with a scent.

Speaker:

He can't not look for his ex. He keeps promising. Adrian, no, no,

Speaker:

no, no, no. We're not gonna do this all weekend. We're gonna do

Speaker:

this all weekend. This is all we're gonna do. He doesn't even try.

Speaker:

That's all he talks about. All they do. And pro agent just like,

Speaker:

we gotta go out to dinner. We're gonna do anything. What about

Speaker:

me?

Speaker:

Yeah, what about me?

Speaker:

This really got me angry because this whole time we're hearing,

Speaker:

oh, no, no, this trip's gonna be great. We're gonna have time to

Speaker:

just reconnect. We're gonna do all these fun things. We're gonna

Speaker:

relax. But literally the first thing Caleb does when they get in

Speaker:

the hotel room is call isaac. Like, no cuddling, no hey, you want

Speaker:

to go for lunch? Nothing. The door closes, he puts his bag down,

Speaker:

Bang. He's on the phone with his ex. Men.

Speaker:

And also, like, Caleb, I'm sure, planned this entire trip. It's

Speaker:

not just a coincidence that they're going to P Town, right? Who

Speaker:

goes to P Town in the winter? So, so there's that uncomfortableness

Speaker:

about an ex and what that means on a relationship. And so a

Speaker:

lot of that's in this film as well. I thought that was really.

Speaker:

And also, like, we learned, we learned from the shitty friends that,

Speaker:

that, that it just an ex. Isaac proposed?

Speaker:

Yeah, to Caleb.

Speaker:

Like, this was going to be serious. And Caleb was like, man,

Speaker:

there's a whole thing. Caleb can't. They can't commit. He just

Speaker:

wants it all.

Speaker:

Oh, that's a good question. Did you think Isaac proposed? Because

Speaker:

I thought Adrian was the one that proposed. I thought Isaac proposed.

Speaker:

Interesting. Okay. All right. I thought Adrian proposed and, and

Speaker:

Caleb either put it off or did not accept. And so that's also caused

Speaker:

a little bit of a rift. But you think Isaac. I'm gonna have to

Speaker:

watch again and see and see. I'm not sure now. Yeah, I'm not sure

Speaker:

either. Either does work. Yeah, either works. Both outcome

Speaker:

is shitty.

Speaker:

Ding Dong Patrick from the future here. Dan was right. It was

Speaker:

Adrian who proposed to Caleb, not Isaac. Before we get to leave

Speaker:

on the. Trip, we meet a second set of shitty, shitty friends. But

Speaker:

this time it's Caleb shitty friends who have some really, really

Speaker:

shitty things to say about Adrian.

Speaker:

So do you guys not like Adrian?

Speaker:

No, no, Adrian's cool. I just. I just don't think I would have.

Speaker:

Picked you for someone like him.

Speaker:

Yeah, well, he's no Isaac, but that's Not what I was getting at.

Speaker:

So what are you so surprised about?

Speaker:

Caleb? Come on, he proposed to you a Year ago and you turned him

Speaker:

down.

Speaker:

No, I didn't. I just told him not right now. Adrian knows where

Speaker:

I stand.

Speaker:

Exactly. And none of this is any of our business.

Speaker:

He has been moping around for a. Full year like some sad puppy,

Speaker:

all. Waiting for your word. One of these days someone is just.

Speaker:

Going to uppercut you.

Speaker:

Yeah. So he's very much like Inspector Howie.

Speaker:

Yeah. Sergeant Howe in the Wicker Man. He keeps getting opportunities.

Speaker:

People keep saying, you know, you can leave at any time. You don't

Speaker:

need to keep doing this, you can go. He keeps having the door

Speaker:

shown him and he. He will not stand stop on this quest. So this,

Speaker:

what happens is inevitable. Yeah. And there's got the same sense

Speaker:

of inevitability that the Wicker man does. Yeah, there's that,

Speaker:

there's the McGuffin. There's a disappeared person in both. Like

Speaker:

in the first one, it's a little. In Wicker man, it's a little

Speaker:

girl that's disappeared. Right. And now it's Isaac. And now

Speaker:

it's Isaac. Yeah. Now

Speaker:

listeners, listen, I just want to take a minute because I did not

Speaker:

make this clear before we started. We can't fully discuss the

Speaker:

movie without spoiling it, but however, since it's only available

Speaker:

on Blu Ray right now, and it is, it's still relatively new, we're

Speaker:

going to give you a. Now we are going to talk, Dan. We're going

Speaker:

to talk to the party. We're going to get them to the party. And

Speaker:

after that we can talk. Maybe in some generalities, but the actual

Speaker:

ending. Ending. We're going to stop. Sure. We're going to wrap up

Speaker:

the show and then we're going to. Okay, put it as a bonus at the

Speaker:

end because we can't not. No. This film is so new, it hasn't been

Speaker:

seen by that many people, so it would be a shame to spoil it.

Speaker:

Yeah. No, yeah. No, I mean, you know from the. Tone of it that

Speaker:

it's not going. To end well for anybody. So we're not spoiling

Speaker:

that. Right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

There's no happy endings. No one's getting that. Well, some people

Speaker:

are getting happy ending.

Speaker:

It is a horror film after all. It's a dark.

Speaker:

Happy endings are happening. Not the kind that we're talking about.

Speaker:

Tell me about Eric. About

Speaker:

Eric. Eric is. Eric is this young guy that they meet when they

Speaker:

first get to p town and he shows them around. He's trying to

Speaker:

help them find Isaac.

Speaker:

Can I help you boys with something? Oh, yeah, he checked out

Speaker:

last week, I think.

Speaker:

yeah. He was working over the summer, but then posted about staying

Speaker:

through the off season.

Speaker:

That's weird. Most wouldn't want to do that. It gets real depressing

Speaker:

here in the winter.

Speaker:

Yeah. It's not like him. I'm a little worried.

Speaker:

Well, I can show you boys around if you want. I live here full

Speaker:

time. I know all the year rounders. They might have seen him.

Speaker:

And he shows them around town, introduces them to people. No one

Speaker:

seems to want to talk or remembers Isaac. And the three of

Speaker:

them form an interesting bond. They end up all sleeping together

Speaker:

at one point in the film. Well, several points in the film.

Speaker:

And so you know what you're thinking about Eric is. Is he a plant?

Speaker:

Is he like, what's exactly going on? Is this as innocent as

Speaker:

it appears in the beginning? He just. They just happen. They just

Speaker:

happen. Angel, devil. Right? Yeah. No, I found all that stuff

Speaker:

with him fun.

Speaker:

Like it was.

Speaker:

It was knowing his presence can't be good, but not sureing how

Speaker:

this is going to play out was fun. Yeah. Yeah. You're not. And

Speaker:

I kept waiting. I get waiting for that sh. Like when the threesome

Speaker:

happened, I'm like, oh, this is when this one's gonna be bad.

Speaker:

This when. When they come out of it. Because it's normally in a

Speaker:

movie where the relationship falls apart. Yeah, but doesn't. And

Speaker:

Eric is. Eric is young. And all the other people that have stayed

Speaker:

that stay during the winter that we meet seem to be older men,

Speaker:

workingclass men. And you're like, wow, this cute little twinkie

Speaker:

guy has stayed here. He's sort of living among all these older men.

Speaker:

So he sort of sticks out a little bit. He does stick out a little

Speaker:

bit.

Speaker:

Yeah. He provided. This isn't a funny movie.

Speaker:

There's not a lot of jokes in it. But I Did laugh twice because

Speaker:

of stuff he did.

Speaker:

Because he's.

Speaker:

He's carting them all around this town.

Speaker:

And what I also love about this is that Provincetown becomes

Speaker:

a character.

Speaker:

Oh, yeah. In this movie, the.

Speaker:

This empty frozen wasteland of a vacation.

Speaker:

Down is a character onto itself. And they use the landscape.

Speaker:

It's a brilliantly. So he's taking them to the beaches and all

Speaker:

these rundown areas and looking for bodies and, you know,

Speaker:

interviewing every longshoreman and shit. And it's clearly

Speaker:

freezing.

Speaker:

I know from the cast, they said they were fucking freezing for

Speaker:

four years.

Speaker:

Making this movie out on the beach in January on like a bunch

Speaker:

of idiots with no coats on. But yeah.

Speaker:

So this guy's been a great sport.

Speaker:

He's carrying.

Speaker:

He's carrying them around all day and they're like, ok, you know

Speaker:

what? We've. We've spent a day. Why don't we go do something

Speaker:

else?

Speaker:

Thank you, Eric, for all your help.

Speaker:

Today, but I think we spent enough time on this.

Speaker:

I'm sorry. Let me take you boys out tonight.

Speaker:

You boys doing anything?

Speaker:

Is there something to do?

Speaker:

And a like, well, what else is there to do in this town?

Speaker:

No, Eric just got the look of.

Speaker:

Like he's going to say me.

Speaker:

What.

Speaker:

Everyone else there is to do in this town.

Speaker:

You can do me.

Speaker:

And they do.

Speaker:

And it happens so easily, by the way. Like, there's no discussion

Speaker:

about it. They end up back in the hotel room. Caleb comes out of

Speaker:

the bathroom and Adrian and Eric are in bed already touching

Speaker:

each other. So.

Speaker:

But we had it. It's an hour and it's an hour and 19 minute run

Speaker:

time. We know how it's going to end up. We just cut to the chase.

Speaker:

You got to get to it.

Speaker:

What do we need?

Speaker:

Who needs all the blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Speaker:

This is Grinder time. Like, who had time to cut you the chase?

Speaker:

We've been together all day. Right, right.

Speaker:

Spent 14 hours in the dunes.

Speaker:

Let's go. We all know what we really want. I'm just thinking about.

Speaker:

I shouldn't even. Should I talk about three ways in that requires

Speaker:

so much discussion and planning and logistics. But yes,

Speaker:

I guess when you're in P town in the off scene is season, it's

Speaker:

like, what else?

Speaker:

And there's literally.

Speaker:

There's literally nobody else. Let's go back to the BNB and get

Speaker:

it on.

Speaker:

He's been really keeping really generous. He carries.

Speaker:

We gotta say thank you somehow. Yeah. Yeah. He carted us.

Speaker:

Yeah. He's been taking us to Men who yell at us.

Speaker:

I mentioned earlier how P Town is very much its own character in

Speaker:

the movie. And I love how Eric is the.

Speaker:

Gateway to P Town.

Speaker:

Not just for Caleb, but Adrian, but for us, the audience.

Speaker:

Eric is like a bridge because it's through him that we're introduced

Speaker:

to all the quirky locals. You know, the fisherman and the guy who

Speaker:

owns the coffee shop. And just like in the Wicker man, everybody's

Speaker:

super friendly and super helpful, but they're almost too friendly

Speaker:

and too helpful. So Eric's getting us into the cozy part of

Speaker:

P Town, but also it's him that's dragging Caleb and Adrian

Speaker:

deeper.

Speaker:

And deeper into the wilderness.

Speaker:

He keeps bringing them farther and farther out of town, into the

Speaker:

beaches, into the wilds, into these dangerous areas, you know,

Speaker:

where the bodies wash up. These frozen, empty, dangerous places

Speaker:

that you're not supposed to go in the wintertime. Except we keep

Speaker:

going there in the wintertime. But, you know, Eric's just trying

Speaker:

to help, right? Or is he just trying to help? The movie keeps playing

Speaker:

with your head that way. And I think it's great stuff. Oh, one of

Speaker:

the other characters that.

Speaker:

We run into, his character Myron, the guy who runs the antique

Speaker:

shop. He's classic horror movie character. He's like Crazy

Speaker:

Ralph from. Well, not. Not exactly Crazy Ralph from Friday the

Speaker:

13th, but he's the character who we know has a secret, who's been

Speaker:

living here a long time. He's the get off my lawn type of character.

Speaker:

So he's a. He's a. He's sort of like a horror film staple, like

Speaker:

you guys. I don't have any information for you. I don't know

Speaker:

anything about your friend. You need to leave town.

Speaker:

I'm really sorry to bother you. I'm looking for a friend of

Speaker:

mine. He was working in town over the summer. I have a photo of

Speaker:

him. His name's Isaac. He's actually sitting in front of your

Speaker:

shop.

Speaker:

If he's missing, there's no use searching for him now. Hey, what

Speaker:

I'm saying is this is a transient town. A lot of faces come,

Speaker:

a lot of faces go.

Speaker:

Well, do you recognize them?

Speaker:

Yeah, but you boys all look the same. Now, if he was smart, he

Speaker:

hightailed her that sound. And if he didn't, he's not gonna be the

Speaker:

man in that photograph.

Speaker:

Wait, what are you trying to say?

Speaker:

What I'm trying to say is give up your search, boy. Don't bother

Speaker:

me again.

Speaker:

But. But I liked this guy. He comes, he has. He has sort of a He

Speaker:

makes an impression in the story. He's. He's more than just

Speaker:

a device, I feel like. I mean, we find out later. Later. Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh, yeah. 101 and I.

Speaker:

It took me half the movie to figure out that that was Gloria Hall.

Speaker:

Oh, that was.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Michael McAdams. Oh, my gosh.

Speaker:

Dead face just lit up like a Christmas tree because.

Speaker:

Wow, that's great.

Speaker:

You know, I love.

Speaker:

I love that these two years, like, there's. Now they have a repertoire

Speaker:

of actors that they use, and they're. That's great because that's

Speaker:

what. Nothing like a stable. That's what every actor wants. They

Speaker:

want people to be like, hey, come be in this. Come be in our film.

Speaker:

Let's. Let's collaborate on this thing. So I, I. About these

Speaker:

guys, I also, I also love that they're from Providence, Rhode Island.

Speaker:

I have a huge place in my heart for Providence, Rhode Island.

Speaker:

I think it is so much fun. And what was great about watching Death

Speaker:

Drop was I've been in all those gay bars. I've walked down

Speaker:

those streets. It's.

Speaker:

Slept with her.

Speaker:

Slept with her.

Speaker:

I know him. I know her.

Speaker:

No, I, My. My. My partner spends a lot of time on Nantucket,

Speaker:

so I, I'm. I. And so we would drive to Hyannis and always stop

Speaker:

in Providence. Always do a night in Providence, get a nice hotel,

Speaker:

have a nice dinner, visit the gay bars. So it brought back all

Speaker:

those memories. Now. Now when I go back there and be like, where's.

Speaker:

Where is Michael? Where is Brandon? Where are these guys? I

Speaker:

want to run into them. Well, they're all dead. All those guys

Speaker:

are dead, unfortunately. Sorry, Sorry. That's another movie

Speaker:

Back to here.

Speaker:

Yeah, but what I liked about this.

Speaker:

Character is that, like you said, it's.

Speaker:

A hard movie staple.

Speaker:

But he's not just to get off my lawn, get out here. You all do.

Speaker:

Doomed kind of guy.

Speaker:

He is also trying to help them.

Speaker:

At the same time. Yeah.

Speaker:

As much as he can.

Speaker:

Like, it turns out he's like, I'm trying to help you, but not say

Speaker:

anything that will get me killed. So he says fun things. Some

Speaker:

of the dialogue. His dialogue. Like what he's like, if he's missing,

Speaker:

there's no use looking for him now. Yeah, just stop. Don't bother.

Speaker:

Don't bother. I know it sounds harsh, but. No, trust me, you don't

Speaker:

want to keep looking for. You don't. He also has this terrifying

Speaker:

line where he. I think Caleb comes to see him a second time and

Speaker:

he said. He says something like. Like Your boyfriend is lost.

Speaker:

You need to leave now. And that was like, what? Leave alone?

Speaker:

You only have a few hours left to save yourself.

Speaker:

Do yourself a favor and get the out of here. Just forget about

Speaker:

your friend. There are things that lay dormant in the summer that

Speaker:

are lurking in the streets.

Speaker:

Off with your riddles. I know you know something.

Speaker:

Do you know the man you've been spending time with? Eric, I'm

Speaker:

trying to help you, but I have to protect myself first and foremost.

Speaker:

This town, its inhabitants, it's not safe for people like me.

Speaker:

And you leave.

Speaker:

Leave alone.

Speaker:

Forget about your friend, your partner.

Speaker:

They're gone.

Speaker:

You have precious little time to save yourself.

Speaker:

One of those other times when he's being confronted, he's like,

Speaker:

look at.

Speaker:

I gotta find my friend. He's like, listen, boys, come, come, boys,

Speaker:

go, boys.

Speaker:

Get lost in the tide.

Speaker:

Stop looking for trouble, boy.

Speaker:

Tell me what you know about Isaac.

Speaker:

Don't get involved in the happenings of this town once winter

Speaker:

rolls in.

Speaker:

Why?

Speaker:

What is it about this place?

Speaker:

Boys come to get caught in the tide.

Speaker:

What does that mean?

Speaker:

What does that mean? What does that.

Speaker:

And then. Well, we know what that means now. Yeah, we know what

Speaker:

that means now. Is that. Yeah, it's. It's not just Adrian Isaac

Speaker:

that's gone missing. Hot young men disappear here all the time during

Speaker:

the winter. It's just a thing. You know, people think they can stay

Speaker:

through the winter, run out of money, and then. Oh, well, nobody

Speaker:

knows what happens to them.

Speaker:

Listen, I didn't want to make you guys worried, but I don't know,

Speaker:

the seasonal guys, sometimes they get stuck here. They blow through

Speaker:

their money, and they can't leave town.

Speaker:

So if Isaac was stuck, you would call me?

Speaker:

Those places are rough. I. I've. I've had friends who have spent,

Speaker:

like, a winter in Nantucket in the off season or in P town, and

Speaker:

it gets dark, it gets depressing, it gets lonely, it gets

Speaker:

cold. And so. Yeah, yeah, that. I mean, you know, in this movie,

Speaker:

there's a supernatural bend to it, but it. There's also that, like,

Speaker:

there's nothing to do. And you're like, P Town feels like it's

Speaker:

the end of the world, right? It's a peninsula at the end of Cape

Speaker:

Cod. And so the type I love in this movie. What did they use? Drones?

Speaker:

Some of those shots of the beaches. Overhead they had to have,

Speaker:

or the. Car driving on the highway? Like, I saw the budget of

Speaker:

this. It says $20,000 on IMDb. This movie looks like a million bucks.

Speaker:

Like, literally, it doesn't look like it was made for $20,000.

Speaker:

They really. They really have done a great job. But the drones

Speaker:

were so impressive. And it also. It's not just using a drone

Speaker:

to use a drone. It really. It really. It really plays into the

Speaker:

mood and atmosphere of the movie. So 100%. You really. It captures

Speaker:

that whole isolation desolation of things.

Speaker:

This should be beautiful.

Speaker:

But right now it's not. No, no, no. If you were here just three

Speaker:

months ago, you'd love it. But right now, yeah. Death Trap. Welcome.

Speaker:

And tons of it goes on for as far as the eye can see. Nothing and

Speaker:

nobody. Oh, my gosh. Except him. He's waiting. Good old St. Joo.

Speaker:

Since I know these guys a bit, you know, in real life, and I know

Speaker:

how they write and I know how they think. I was like when in the

Speaker:

threesome scene, the first one, Eric introduces drugs to the

Speaker:

equation and I said, what is that, coke? He said, no, it's anaphora.

Speaker:

Something new. And I went, it's not a thing. Well, we find out

Speaker:

later what it is. But I said that. That. That word is standing

Speaker:

out to me. Like, what does that mean? And not surprisingly,

Speaker:

it's all biblical. Everything. Everything has to do with biblical

Speaker:

stuff in this. Even the names, the characters, anaphora. It's. It's

Speaker:

a. It's an oratory device where you keep repeating a phrase

Speaker:

at the beginning of another beginning of a sentence over and

Speaker:

over to make a point, like the I have a dream speech. But it's mostly

Speaker:

used in religious oratory like the Beatitudes. Blessed be the. Blessed

Speaker:

be the. Thou shalt not. Thou shalt not. Thou shalt not. Wow. But

Speaker:

this religious imagery all through this, it's just subtle. Like

Speaker:

I. They'll show the masses of a boat, but it feels like a crucifix.

Speaker:

Yeah. There at the party they're coming up to. There's a pipe

Speaker:

organ in this house.

Speaker:

Why is there a pipe organ in the house?

Speaker:

What.

Speaker:

What is this? Where are we? Who are these people?

Speaker:

So most of the movie, as I'm searching for the. For this missing

Speaker:

boyfriend, Caleb's starting to really spin out. He's having his

Speaker:

own hallucinations and getting more and more paranoid and more and

Speaker:

more. More angry. And this relationship keeps getting more and

Speaker:

more strained and we've got, yeah, this now love triangle forming

Speaker:

because the more Caleb freaks out, the more Adrian is really getting

Speaker:

pushed. Yeah. Towards Eric. And of course, Eric's waiting there

Speaker:

with open arms. One of my favorite things is when they have

Speaker:

a fight at One point, it was after that whole shower monologue.

Speaker:

He has a whole very long monologue about this time he did

Speaker:

drugs with Adrian. They thought he was dead in the shower.

Speaker:

But yeah, they have a fight at the end of it. And while they're

Speaker:

walking away way Caleb tries to take Adrian's hand. She. He swats

Speaker:

it away like Melania does. Melania hands. But it's just such

Speaker:

a small moment. It's just small moment. Yeah. What also, it

Speaker:

also occurs to me when they're fighting, I'm thinking, is this organic

Speaker:

or is this something in P town? Are they like. Is something

Speaker:

controlling them? Is something. Is there a. Is the. Is

Speaker:

there. Is their destiny already sealed? Right? Is it. Is

Speaker:

it beyond a couple's fight? Have they been set up to. To have

Speaker:

these fights and create this rift? So, yeah. And the answer is

Speaker:

yes to all of it. Yeah. You do get a sense that there's a power

Speaker:

above them that they may be helpless to now that is already drawing

Speaker:

them to. You know, I don't. I don't want to. No, there. Dan is

Speaker:

100% right. And when you watch the movie, there is a sense of inevitability

Speaker:

to it. You feel. You feel like they're in a trap. Trap. Yeah. So

Speaker:

are they even helpless to. They feel like they're in a trap.

Speaker:

And people keep giving them outs to the trap and Caleb never

Speaker:

takes them.

Speaker:

Right. Right. Yeah. And. And at one point, it just seems like

Speaker:

Adrian is also under the influence of something else. Like

Speaker:

something is working on him.

Speaker:

Well, yeah, yeah. There's.

Speaker:

There's a second threesome. And this time, the first time they

Speaker:

have a threesome, Caleb, Bobby, Eric introduces drugs, this

Speaker:

new drug, Anaphorum into the situation. Is that coke?

Speaker:

Nah, man, much better. Last longer, take some of the edge off.

Speaker:

It's perfect for vacation. It's called Anaphora.

Speaker:

Nah, minimal.

Speaker:

So. How about you, big guy?

Speaker:

I'm good, thanks.

Speaker:

Suit yourself, boys.

Speaker:

And they both refused, right? The second time. After the second

Speaker:

day, when they're really pissed off at each other. And it's

Speaker:

been a horrible day. They've been nothing but fighting and Kayla's

Speaker:

been nothing but awful to Adrian. And this threesome's about

Speaker:

to happen. He gets off for the jokes and he just says,.

Speaker:

Why not?

Speaker:

The first hit is the hardest.

Speaker:

And Michael, Michael Ahern, if you're listening, the way you said

Speaker:

fuck, it was so wonderfully layered. It was a wonderful performance

Speaker:

of a two word line. You could. There were so many ways to toss it

Speaker:

away, make it easy, but it was Rich. It was rich. So much in that.

Speaker:

Fuck it. So much in that. Because it's also all that. Also

Speaker:

all that felt really real. I know we're living. We're. We're living

Speaker:

in a surreal place right now, but. But these are things that happen

Speaker:

in gay culture, right? Yeah, they happen in gay culture. And the

Speaker:

way they fight feels really real. Like the part where Adrian

Speaker:

says, every single decision that has happened in this relationship

Speaker:

since it started is me compromising.

Speaker:

Every sing, every time.

Speaker:

I have to be the one to compromise.

Speaker:

Jesus, Caleb.

Speaker:

It's clear Isaac doesn't want anything to do with you. He's not

Speaker:

answering your calls, he's ignored your texts. And instead of

Speaker:

accepting that, you continue.

Speaker:

To drag your partner through this fucking wild goose chase of

Speaker:

yours.

Speaker:

Oh, and like you have anything better to do.

Speaker:

Miss happy hour with your basic friends.

Speaker:

And your stupid fucking job?

Speaker:

Fuck you.

Speaker:

I don't have time for your insecurities, Adrian.

Speaker:

Oh, my God. Can you grow the fuck up?

Speaker:

There is something happening here.

Speaker:

Why don't you see it?

Speaker:

There's something seriously wrong.

Speaker:

Every fucking decision we've made in this relationship has been

Speaker:

a concession on my behalf.

Speaker:

Do you.

Speaker:

Do you realize what I've given up for you?

Speaker:

And to what end?

Speaker:

You don't even fucking notice.

Speaker:

I know you.

Speaker:

I know you.

Speaker:

Everything's always my fault. That I always have to be the one

Speaker:

to compromise. You can do whatever the fuck you want. I've

Speaker:

been here for three days.

Speaker:

We've been here for three days.

Speaker:

All we've done is look at your fucking boyfriend.

Speaker:

I've asked you so many times, could.

Speaker:

We do anything else? And you won't do anything else. Yeah, here

Speaker:

we were. Here we are, another eight hours in the fucking dunes.

Speaker:

Yeah, and it was his idea to go away. It was Caleb's idea to go

Speaker:

away. And. And, yeah, which I love. Even on the way there. Even

Speaker:

on the way there, when they're talking, the way. On the.

Speaker:

In the car, on the way there.

Speaker:

There. Their conversation is very revealing.

Speaker:

This job, it's stressing me out. And I don't know, I used to

Speaker:

be so certain about everything. And lately I'm not so

Speaker:

sure.

Speaker:

Well, you're not working this weekend, so let's focus on having

Speaker:

some fun, relaxing. I think this will be good for us.

Speaker:

Caleb says it'll be a great time.

Speaker:

We can relax and have some fun. No, you won't. You will not

Speaker:

relax and nobody's having fun. And.

Speaker:

And Adrian's talking about his job and.

Speaker:

He says, I used to be so certain about everything. But now

Speaker:

I'm not so sure.

Speaker:

You talk about your job, Adrian, you talk about this. Yeah.

Speaker:

Everything.

Speaker:

We're everything. I love that because the dialogue works on so

Speaker:

many different levels.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

It's well crafted dialogue, which is impressive. Yeah. Very smart.

Speaker:

These guys are very smart. But yeah. On the second day, Adrian brings.

Speaker:

Eric brings the fact, hey, there's a party tonight.

Speaker:

Maybe you guys should go to this party.

Speaker:

There is this big party tomorrow night. The celebrities,

Speaker:

the big wigs, you know, the ones that are on vacation, vacation

Speaker:

homes here, they throw it every year and it might come up pretty

Speaker:

handed, but I think it would be worth checking out to see if anyone's

Speaker:

seen your friend.

Speaker:

Who's gonna be at the party, Dan, who's throwing the party?

Speaker:

It's gonna be all the people that have stayed all the year rounders,

Speaker:

so it seems mostly older gay men, rich gay men. He said. He says

Speaker:

celebrities. Yeah. So it's. It sounds. It sounds enticing. It looks

Speaker:

enticing. The house is beautiful. And I think that's where

Speaker:

we're gonna pretty much stop. We'll talk. I'm gonna talk. I don't

Speaker:

want to get into anything too more specific. What happens after.

Speaker:

Because after this is where the movie goes bananas. Like it's.

Speaker:

It's been very. A mystery. Yeah. It's been an involving mystery

Speaker:

up until this point. There's been nothing particularly frightening.

Speaker:

There's been some spooky visions and. And some cool shots

Speaker:

and things like that. They set the mood. But there's nothing super

Speaker:

horror. But it's coming. It's about this party is where things

Speaker:

get lit. Yeah. From this moment on, it really unravel. What

Speaker:

I would like to say, like the art direction at this party, I think

Speaker:

is fabulous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. It's like Eyes Wide Shut.

Speaker:

It reminded me of Eyes Wide Shut. It's very much Eyes Wide Shut.

Speaker:

And what I liked about this too. I've seen a couple of movies

Speaker:

now, a couple of gay horror movies now that have tried to recreate

Speaker:

this gay. What's the word I'm looking for? Bacchanalia Feel.

Speaker:

Look at this.

Speaker:

Look at how this gross orgy mess. Yeah. And they always feel

Speaker:

forced. They don't feel real. This felt creepily organic.

Speaker:

So there are a bunch of other movies that I'm thinking of that

Speaker:

I'm not gonna name that they might attempt an orgiastic scene

Speaker:

like this. But they always wind up feeling like porn. It feels

Speaker:

staged, artificial, just exploitive in a dull, uncreative

Speaker:

kind of way. Just try to shock and titillate and that's about it.

Speaker:

But the sex you see going on here not only doesn't look hot and

Speaker:

feel really real, it feels frightening. It feels like decadent

Speaker:

and predatory. And for me, it feels like I'm not just watching

Speaker:

an orgy, I'm watching.

Speaker:

Some sort of a ritual.

Speaker:

And that's really scary. I'm going to paraphrase frequent guests

Speaker:

of the show, Pastor Ben. Hi, Pastor Ben. Pastor Ben. When he's

Speaker:

been on the show before, he'll talk about a scene. He says, I feel

Speaker:

like I'm watching something I shouldn't be seeing. And that's what

Speaker:

these scenes feel like compared to the other scenes. I'm

Speaker:

talking about the lesser orgy scenes in other lesser movies. Those

Speaker:

scenes, scenes are shot to be seen. Look at what we're doing. Look

Speaker:

how naughty this is. Look how gross and sexy. Look how hot we all

Speaker:

are. Look at this hot sex we're having.

Speaker:

But this feels like, yeah, you really shouldn't be here. But you

Speaker:

can look, you can look away. It doesn't really matter. Second

Speaker:

step, what we're doing. But make a choice. It's gonna stay play,

Speaker:

we're gonna run.

Speaker:

Away and ah, that's what it feels like to me. And it's, it keep

Speaker:

gross.

Speaker:

And I love it. Like I've been to the. I'll tell you. I'll tell

Speaker:

you. Patrick. Patrick. Someone contacted me last night while I was

Speaker:

watching this. What are you watching? I'm watching this movie,

Speaker:

Saint Drogo. What's it about? It's about P Town in the winter.

Speaker:

And they're like, oh my gosh, I've been to P Town in the winter.

Speaker:

All it is is these late night parties with everybody getting naked

Speaker:

and doing drugs. I was like, I'm literally watching that right

Speaker:

now.

Speaker:

It's a documentary is what it is.

Speaker:

It seemed, I mean, you know, it's presented in a very surrealistic

Speaker:

way, but a lot of it, I mean, I'm sure that's how things play out

Speaker:

out. If you take away like the weirdo, culty, surreal elements of

Speaker:

it, you know, I'm sure I'm, I've never been, I've never been

Speaker:

to a party like that, unfortunately, yet. But. Or maybe

Speaker:

fortunately, but I've been to one like that. I've been one like

Speaker:

this might have snacks. Well, it seemed like they did have snacks,

Speaker:

but they were human snacks. But. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's,

Speaker:

but you're, you're thinking it's. This is all wrong, right? This

Speaker:

is not Just a bunch of people getting together and h. And. And

Speaker:

a sexy time having drinks and stuff. There's a real. There's a

Speaker:

real certain level of menace that Caleb feels and that is present

Speaker:

at this party. So there's nothing comfortable about this party.

Speaker:

It's very creepy. But even at the party, I. Again, none of this

Speaker:

is specific. But when he first gets there, Caleb has spent.

Speaker:

Caleb has gotten separated.

Speaker:

He's really fre out. He's having all kinds of crazy visions.

Speaker:

He's fought with Adrian. They've split up. Yeah, basically.

Speaker:

You know what?

Speaker:

This guy getting by this guy gives you some self esteem for wants

Speaker:

to.

Speaker:

Just go do that.

Speaker:

Just go, go, go, go.

Speaker:

Then grow a spine.

Speaker:

Whoa, whoa, gentlemen.

Speaker:

Let's pump the brakes. It's all good. Why don't we just go to

Speaker:

that party tonight? Maybe your friend will be there. And after that

Speaker:

we can get you two back on the road into the city.

Speaker:

How's that?

Speaker:

Isaac. His name name is Isaac. You keep referring my friend like

Speaker:

he's some kind of dog. I lost. If this loser boosts your self esteem,

Speaker:

Adrian, then by all means have at it.

Speaker:

And so Adrian's gone and the car's gone and he's been wandering

Speaker:

the beach and tripping. And he winds up at the house where the party

Speaker:

is. And the host invites him right in with open arms, Right?

Speaker:

Oh no.

Speaker:

Like he knows him. Yeah, like he knows.

Speaker:

Like he's. Like he's the prodigal son.

Speaker:

Come on home.

Speaker:

Oh, you poor thing. Come in, come in, Weaver son.

Speaker:

Come in. You're all wet. You look cold. Let us take care of you.

Speaker:

But even then the guy figures out who he's.

Speaker:

Oh, you're Adrian. Oh, yeah. Ancient's here.

Speaker:

Don't apologize. You are more than welcome here. After all, this

Speaker:

is a. A party.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

Tell me, how did such a handsome thing like you get stuck

Speaker:

out in the cold alone?

Speaker:

I'm looking for somebody.

Speaker:

Aren't we all?

Speaker:

My friend Isaac, he came here to work over the summer, then just

Speaker:

never came home. So my partner and I.

Speaker:

Partner? Well, I didn't see any partner. Where could he be?

Speaker:

Well, that's who I'm looking for. He's with this guy Eric.

Speaker:

Oh, Eric.

Speaker:

And you know that handsome young thing he was with it. That's

Speaker:

your partner? Oh, he is a looker. What is Adrian, is it? Maybe

Speaker:

I could get someone to fetch him for you. But you know, he did

Speaker:

want me to give you these. The car is fixed.

Speaker:

It's out back.

Speaker:

But he told me you wouldn't be lasting long tonight. Do try to enjoy

Speaker:

yourself. After all, this is a celebration.

Speaker:

You want to make sure you have these. Your car keys. We fixed your

Speaker:

car for you. Here's your last chance, stupid.

Speaker:

Please take the car keys.

Speaker:

Take them.

Speaker:

It leads to a scene of violence that's so graphic, it. The

Speaker:

word I had for it was operatic. There's something operatic

Speaker:

about the gore. Yeah. And how this all plays out. It's really shocking.

Speaker:

It's really unexpected. I mean, the level of detail that it

Speaker:

gets into is, is, is really shocking. It's also, again, in the

Speaker:

broad day, in broad daylight, which also, for some reason, lends

Speaker:

it an even because you're, you know, expect in broad daylight, everything's

Speaker:

going to be pretty and shiny and a lot of bad body horror happens

Speaker:

in this, in this final shot. And like, we've been following this

Speaker:

character the entire movie. We feel for him. He's become our in

Speaker:

to this film. Right? He's the, he's the one that hasn't succumbed

Speaker:

and now he's being held against his will. And like torture

Speaker:

in movies is just, you know, it really gets to me because that,

Speaker:

the feeling of helplessness, the feeling, especially in this movie,

Speaker:

like you said, given so many chances to leave, given so many chances

Speaker:

to turn around, Adrian is constantly pushing him. Let's go,

Speaker:

let's go, let's go.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

Yeah. And then to end up this way is just so sad. It's upsetting.

Speaker:

It's upsetting. And in the way it plays out, it's all very slow

Speaker:

and it's not.

Speaker:

Even, it's not even.

Speaker:

It's that I, it, the gore is extreme, but there's something about

Speaker:

it that's also not extreme. Exploitive. Right. Like, Right. It's

Speaker:

about the artistry of it all,.

Speaker:

Which makes it worse.

Speaker:

Like, look at how beautiful we're making this. Yeah. Yeah. Someone,

Speaker:

someone compared it to early Tom Savini or Tom Savini special

Speaker:

effects, which always are. Which always look super realistic,

Speaker:

but also, like you said, operatic in a way. And I, I'm, I'm

Speaker:

not. I've learned damn over time. I don't like watching my friends

Speaker:

die on film. So this I, I, I, I, I cry every time I see a friend

Speaker:

in a horror movie. I make a kill. This I was born. This whole

Speaker:

thing is all so upsetting. It's all upsetting.

Speaker:

And I wish we could tell you.

Speaker:

More, but you have to go buy.

Speaker:

The, you have to go buy the.

Speaker:

Blu Ray to find out and do. Buy the Blu Ray. Buy it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Okay, before we go and just wrap things up on the other end,

Speaker:

would you recommend this movie? Would you recommend this movie?

Speaker:

Absolutely. I mean, this movie pushes all my buttons. Like I said,

Speaker:

isolated location, surreal imagery. I love a slow burn. I love

Speaker:

a slow burn because I'm a child of the seventies. And. And

Speaker:

the seventies were all. It's, you know, this is like Messiah of

Speaker:

Evil Dead and Buried all the films we talked about. I love this

Speaker:

location. I would totally recommend this movie. I. And, you

Speaker:

know, it's not. I would. I would say it's not just for gay viewers.

Speaker:

I think everybody would. And horror fans of all ilks were. Will

Speaker:

get something out of this film. So, yeah, I totally recommend

Speaker:

it. Totally recommend it.

Speaker:

Well said, sir.

Speaker:

And also, you said ilks, which is one of my favorite words. No,

Speaker:

I agree. I think also, I mean, it is for a horror movie for everybody.

Speaker:

Because I did the. The group that I did show it to was mixed.

Speaker:

And those who did stay really enjoyed it. But if you're squeamish

Speaker:

about gay stuff, it's not for you. Like, but. And they're not gonna

Speaker:

apologize for that. They're not gonna hold your hand through

Speaker:

the gay stuff and say, no, this is the ugly stuff that we do.

Speaker:

This is our people. This is who we are. Deal with it. And it

Speaker:

also doesn't. It also doesn't.

Speaker:

Like.

Speaker:

It leaves a lot of things unanswered. It leaves a lot of questions,

Speaker:

which is the. Which is also a great thing about the 70s movies,

Speaker:

right? Yeah, like. Like Texas Chainsaw, all this horrifying things.

Speaker:

Stuff happens. And you're like, why? Why did that happen? Happen

Speaker:

in this. There's so. There's so much mystery that's still left

Speaker:

at the end. We don't really completely know what's going on,

Speaker:

who these people are, why they're doing this. I mean, it sent

Speaker:

me down a rabbit hole of looking up, what was Saint. Who was

Speaker:

Saint Drago? How was that. Or Drogo? How was that connected to

Speaker:

this film? How was that connected to the events of this film?

Speaker:

Like you said, there's all these biblical references. So this.

Speaker:

This. This movie has a. This movie will keep you talking also.

Speaker:

So after you've seen it. Yeah, 100%. 100%. Not giving anything away,

Speaker:

but there is a St. Drogo. You're wondering why this is called

Speaker:

St. Drogo. St. Drogo rises from the sea. And it's not good,

Speaker:

right? It's not good. But in the early Prince, St. Drogo drops.

Speaker:

He comes in with the Act 3 exposition drop. This is what this

Speaker:

is all about. This is what I want. This is what we've all been

Speaker:

building to. This is why this is happening. And I couldn't understand

Speaker:

a fucking word he said. Not a single, single word he said. And

Speaker:

so I was so happy when the Blu Ray came out. He's got subtitles

Speaker:

now. Oh. Oh, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

Subtitles weren't there,.

Speaker:

But even with the subtitles, it's still a little bit murky.

Speaker:

Like, it's a little bit murky. But the thing is, I've done my.

Speaker:

Head cannon on it, and I think I have my own thing because I built

Speaker:

my own version. When I didn't have that, when I didn't have his

Speaker:

exposition, I had to figure out for myself what was going on.

Speaker:

And I had something that I think works, and it still works.

Speaker:

And we'll talk about it on the other side.

Speaker:

All right, Dan, to make us.

Speaker:

You have some projects coming up. Let people know where they can

Speaker:

find.

Speaker:

You and what neat things you're doing.

Speaker:

In New York City soon. I'm right now rehearsing a play at the

Speaker:

Public Theater. It's called Public Charge. We start performances

Speaker:

March 12th. Public theater, that's theater with T E r@theend.org.

Speaker:

Buy your tickets. We're running through from March 12th to

Speaker:

April 5th. And I've. I've got my own podcast, too. Hot Date with

Speaker:

dan and Vicki. Hotdatepod.com you can find it us. You can find

Speaker:

us on all your podcasts.

Speaker:

What happens on the hot date?

Speaker:

What do you do? What.

Speaker:

What's so hot about this date?

Speaker:

Well, we pick a random date in history and then we find a movie

Speaker:

that came out around or near that date, and Vicky and I watch

Speaker:

it and talk about it. So it's our way of watching movies that we

Speaker:

haven't seen. Sort of expanding our own film library. So.

Speaker:

No, I like that because, you know, it doesn't limit you to one

Speaker:

genre or anything. Exactly. We jump around. People always think,

Speaker:

because it's me, it's a horror podcast. But it's not actually. We

Speaker:

actually don't talk about horror a ton. I. We do, but the film

Speaker:

we choose is usually not horror. Always good to push one's

Speaker:

bond bound. Always good to use words that can you pronounce. Use

Speaker:

your words, Patrick. Use your words.

Speaker:

All right, for those of you who are brave and want to find out

Speaker:

what happened in. In St. Joe, for those who've already seen it

Speaker:

and want to. Want to hear what we've got to say about what I think's

Speaker:

been going on. What Dan think is going on. We'll see you.

Speaker:

I'm the other side.

Speaker:

Okay, that was fabulous. Yay. Thank you once again to my very special

Speaker:

guest, Dan Domingues. It's always such a pleasure to hang out

Speaker:

with you and talk about scary movies. I bet some of you sitting

Speaker:

out there have noticed. Hey, Patrick, isn't that play that dad

Speaker:

talked about appearing at the Public? Didn't that close, like weeks

Speaker:

ago? Yes, it did. Unfortunately, this episode took

Speaker:

a lot longer to produce than I wanted to do.

Speaker:

To microphone problems, which I'll try to explain in a little bit.

Speaker:

I worked my hardest to get this episode out. Said he could at

Speaker:

least catch the tail end of Dan at the Public.

Speaker:

Theater, but unfortunately it was just not in the cards.

Speaker:

However, I spoke to Dan and if you want to see some stuff that he's

Speaker:

doing, he's in the video podcast Vex voom in the 21st century.

Speaker:

It's his new neo futuristic sci fi spoof podcast that's available

Speaker:

on video as well. He's going to do 15 episodes of them. Or rather,

Speaker:

I should say he has.

Speaker:

Done 15 episodes of them. So they're available out there.

Speaker:

It's very funny.

Speaker:

I just watched a couple of them.

Speaker:

If you like the Lost Skeleton of.

Speaker:

Cadavera, you'll love Vex foom in the 21st century because I got

Speaker:

a real.

Speaker:

Kick out of it.

Speaker:

The link will be down there in.

Speaker:

The show notes as well as a link to Dan's other podcast, Hot

Speaker:

Date.

Speaker:

With Dan and Vicki.

Speaker:

So once again, thank you, Dan. It was pleasure having you would

Speaker:

be on this very special occasion. Patrick, what's going on

Speaker:

with the microphones? I don't know. I don't.

Speaker:

I still don't know. It's an ongoing thing.

Speaker:

It's been going on since I ended the show. I ended the show

Speaker:

and immediately started.

Speaker:

Having these mic conflict problems. My m. My major microphone,

Speaker:

my big,.

Speaker:

Expensive microphone just won't work with my PC. So I bought

Speaker:

a new PC and.

Speaker:

It's not working with that either.

Speaker:

Except sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and I don't.

Speaker:

I don't know why. One of the secondary reasons that this episode

Speaker:

with Dan took so long was not so much the microphone problems.

Speaker:

It was that when we recorded, it was a good microphone day. Everything

Speaker:

worked and we sound great. But now I have to add pickups.

Speaker:

I have to add the beginning of.

Speaker:

The show, I have to add the end of the show, and all of a sudden

Speaker:

the mic's not cooperating. It's not cooperating right now. I

Speaker:

don't know if you can hear it.

Speaker:

I'm on a shitty headset mic and.

Speaker:

I didn't want to change the quality.

Speaker:

Quality of sound mid show. Like have these little pops of. Of

Speaker:

questionable sound and make everything, well, shitty at least.

Speaker:

Definitely this tag at least episode's over. It's done.

Speaker:

You've already invested.

Speaker:

But the episode said it's so good and this movie means so much

Speaker:

to me that I want the episode to be perfect. Okay? It's my resurrection

Speaker:

and they're ruining it.

Speaker:

It's not fair.

Speaker:

I'm gonna have to come back, do.

Speaker:

It all over again anyway.

Speaker:

I don't know what's going on. Anyone out there is a PC expert who

Speaker:

might be able to help me.

Speaker:

Understand what's going on. Why it's. Sometimes one sometimes

Speaker:

works, sometimes not. Because let's let me tell you, I bought a

Speaker:

new PC. It's not working there. Spoke to the microphone manufacturer.

Speaker:

They sent me a patch for the.

Speaker:

For the drivers. It worked for a while, but now today it's not working

Speaker:

yet. Today when I want to finish the Dan episode is not working.

Speaker:

I'm complaining. I'm complaining and ruining my own resurrection.

Speaker:

From the dead party. Okay, I know the real question on all of

Speaker:

your mind is patch or Eric, when are you coming back to see us

Speaker:

again?

Speaker:

Well, I don't know.

Speaker:

That's not entirely up to me.

Speaker:

Like I said, there is a short.

Speaker:

List of films and I'm not telling you what they are that I

Speaker:

said when they finally get released on a mainstream level, or

Speaker:

at least a more public way, I want to cover them because I think

Speaker:

they're fabulous and I think you'll love them. I don't know when

Speaker:

they're coming, so we wait. However, I also said when I stumble.

Speaker:

Across a movie that is so ScreamQueenzthat I can't not come

Speaker:

back from the dead and talk about it, I will do that as well.

Speaker:

I have a couple of those in.

Speaker:

The books as well.

Speaker:

I also don't want to overload you, be like Patrick. I thought you

Speaker:

were. I thought you were retired. What do you share?

Speaker:

Yes, I am. Yes, I am.

Speaker:

So I don't want to be bombarding you with ScreamQueenzepisodes

Speaker:

after I retired, constantly.

Speaker:

So we're going to wait.

Speaker:

You're going to get one at the.

Speaker:

End of the summer. Okay. And then get another one around Christmas.

Speaker:

How's going it that? So keep your eyes on your feed and we'll

Speaker:

see what happens.

Speaker:

And also, you need to Be keeping your eyes on your feet anyway,

Speaker:

because there's lots going on at the ScreamQueenz Potter verse.

Speaker:

If you love Friday the 13th the series, you should be listening

Speaker:

to Damian Wonka Lewis. Our Friday the 13th this series retrospective

Speaker:

podcast for years is only available on Patreon, and now it's

Speaker:

slowly being released to the public every third Friday of the

Speaker:

month. Yes, it's a schedule change that just.

Speaker:

Happened, but every third Friday you're gonna get episodes.

Speaker:

First Friday get a retro ScreamQueenzand the third Friday

Speaker:

get a Damien Walker Lewis. If you love Scream. If you miss Scream

Speaker:

Queen so much, I'm re releasing classic episodes every

Speaker:

first Friday. Classic episodes that haven't seen the light of day

Speaker:

till 2017. Remember way back, long time listeners, I had a completely

Speaker:

different theme song. It used to be Hunting for witches. I go hunted

Speaker:

for witches. How to go in a row. Well, I lost the rights of that.

Speaker:

I couldn't use it anymore, so I had to take all those episodes

Speaker:

down. However, I'm editing them down and re releasing them every

Speaker:

first Friday of the month. So you can relive the early magic of

Speaker:

ScreamQueenz and also also keep your eyes on your feeds. Because

Speaker:

public episodes of it came from the 70s. The movie where I talk

Speaker:

about films made for TV. Movies from the 70s where we thought

Speaker:

saccharine was a good idea.

Speaker:

We got a new one coming down.

Speaker:

The pike next month. Next month we're going to be talking.

Speaker:

About my friend Martin is coming back,.

Speaker:

Who you met at Crow Haven Farm. He's coming back to talk about

Speaker:

She's Dressed to Kill. It's all about. The world's greatest models

Speaker:

are invited to an exclusive fashion show at a mountain tops chalet

Speaker:

and get knocked off one by one by one. It's like an Agatha Christie,

Speaker:

but the whole cast is filled with the cheesiest 70s people ever.

Speaker:

It's terrible and you'll love it. That's coming next month. And

Speaker:

if I get this microphone things resolved, I will start recording

Speaker:

these, what I like to call ScreamQueenzbehind the Screams, where

Speaker:

I'm talking to LGBT horror filmmakers. I got Roger Connors,

Speaker:

director of the gay slasher movie Meet, waiting in the wings.

Speaker:

However, I can't do it with a shitty microphone. So let's just

Speaker:

pray we get these things resolved. So, hey, if you know anything

Speaker:

about PCs, if you have any electronic wizardry in your system,

Speaker:

please contact me. Please let me know. And let's see if we can

Speaker:

get this fixed. Because Lord knows, Best Buy has been no help.

Speaker:

But I am complaining again on My very special day.

Speaker:

And I'm not going to do that. So I'm just going to say thank.

Speaker:

You again to Dan for joining me.

Speaker:

But more importantly, thank you everybody for being here. It's

Speaker:

nice to see everybody still here. Maybe we made some new friends

Speaker:

along the way as well. I made more friends dead than I was alive.

Speaker:

How sad. What are we. What am I even talking about? I don't know

Speaker:

anymore. All right, I. Everyone, whether you're coming to

Speaker:

join me on board at it came from the 70s or a Damian Lewis, or

Speaker:

you just gotta wait around for the next new ScreamQueenz to roll

Speaker:

around wherever it was. Thank you so much for joining me. But just

Speaker:

remember, the ScreamQueenz golden rule is still in effect. Fight

Speaker:

or flight, survive the night, make.

Speaker:

It to the final reel. They stay safe, stay healthy, and most

Speaker:

of all, stay fabulous. Because I love you.

Speaker:

Now get out of here.

Speaker:

Except, of course, if you're sticking around to hear the spoiler

Speaker:

for Saint Drogo, in which.

Speaker:

Which case, don't go anywhere.

Speaker:

For the rest of you, get out of here. All of the music for tonight's

Speaker:

show, unless otherwise specified, has been written by Sam

Speaker:

Haynes. You can find all of his music@www.bandcamp.ass.

Speaker:

Ew.

Speaker:

Dance. Yes. Girl, girl, girl. What the hell is going on here?

Speaker:

We have got to talk about the end of this movie. All right, listeners,

Speaker:

this is your absolute last chance. If you don't want St. Joe

Speaker:

go spoiled, turn the recording off now because we can't wait anymore.

Speaker:

5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Here we go. By the way, ding dong, this is Patrick

Speaker:

from the future, because Dan and.

Speaker:

I got so excited that we just.

Speaker:

Dove right into the nitty gritty without actually explaining

Speaker:

anything that happens in the end of this film. Okay, so we were

Speaker:

at the party right now at the party, Caleb was sitting with the

Speaker:

host, right? And the host was like, hey, everything's great, you

Speaker:

know, Here are your keys. Have some drugs. Enjoy the party. And

Speaker:

last we saw him, Caleb said no to the drugs, took the keys, but

Speaker:

didn't take the opportunity to escape. However, he did accept the

Speaker:

cup of tea that the host was so kind to provide for him on this

Speaker:

cold, wintry night. Whatever you do when you're in this kind of

Speaker:

a situation, don't drink the tea because, surprise, it spiked.

Speaker:

So when Caleb is wandering through the party, we're never really

Speaker:

sure if what he's seeing is real or if what he is seeing is an

Speaker:

illusion. If all the sex and perversion and strange things that

Speaker:

we see are a fantasy or Reality. Guess what? Their reality.

Speaker:

And one of the things we see with the last things we see is Adrian,

Speaker:

his boyfriend, getting pounded by the host of his party while the

Speaker:

host is just staring Caleb right in the eye, like, yep, I'm

Speaker:

taking this. He's mine now. He's one of us now, Adrian. You fucking

Speaker:

kidding me?

Speaker:

Get the out of here. Come on, Kaleb.

Speaker:

Please, Adrian.

Speaker:

I don't want to go with you.

Speaker:

Caleb eventually passes out. When he wakes up, he's on the beach.

Speaker:

It's morning. It's a beautiful, cold, wintry morning.

Speaker:

Morning. But he's tied up. Everybody's in robes, chanting, hail,

Speaker:

Saint Drogo.

Speaker:

Hail, hail, Saint Drogo.

Speaker:

Hail Saint Drogo. The Wicker man ending. Here it comes. And it's

Speaker:

going to be bad.

Speaker:

This is a very long sequence, and we're just exploring the layers

Speaker:

of betrayal that have gone on.

Speaker:

That we see that Adrian's there and.

Speaker:

He's just watching and he's not going to help. He's gone. Kept

Speaker:

screaming for help and screaming, I.

Speaker:

Love you, but it's just too late. And he gets one more chance

Speaker:

to save himself, because Saint Drogo finally arrives, that robed

Speaker:

figure that we've seen throughout. We now see him being

Speaker:

escorted onto the beach.

Speaker:

And we finally see what's under the robes. It's this hideous,

Speaker:

withered skeleton of a.

Speaker:

Creature with too many teeth. Teeth in places where you shouldn't

Speaker:

have teeth. And Saint Drogo gives him an ultimatum, essentially

Speaker:

saying, join me. We don't have to do this. All you need to do is

Speaker:

partake of my communion and you'll be one us of forever. And

Speaker:

the communion is that drug that.

Speaker:

They've been pushing on him. But Caleb says no.

Speaker:

And he's sacrificed in this incredibly slow ritual. His legs

Speaker:

are broken and he's disemboweled. He's beheaded. It's

Speaker:

a lot. While everyone stands and watches, while Adrian stands

Speaker:

there and watches. And in all this, we also discover that, oh,

Speaker:

by the way, Isaac's alive.

Speaker:

He's fine.

Speaker:

He's one of the people that are helping. This has all been for

Speaker:

nothing. You've been chasing a lie this whole time. This was inevitable.

Speaker:

We gave you a million chances to escape. That's the big ending

Speaker:

of the movie. Caleb is killed.

Speaker:

Evil wins.

Speaker:

It's very upsetting.

Speaker:

There's a text in which we'll get.

Speaker:

Into later because I want to talk to Dan.

Speaker:

I've been yapping long enough.

Speaker:

Okay. Not to spoil the ending of Death Drop gorgeous for you, Dan,

Speaker:

because I.

Speaker:

Know you didn't finish it but movie's been out for a while and

Speaker:

you should have finished it by now. I know you were saying. But

Speaker:

Brandon who plays Caleb and this also gets disemboweled at the

Speaker:

end of. You're kidding.

Speaker:

I've said I've seen his insights so.

Speaker:

Many times by now. These guys have themes.

Speaker:

Good lord, Brandon. Put him away.

Speaker:

Brandon's one big prolapse. I love you, Brandon. So.

Speaker:

So. Yeah. So the whole thing is that Provincetown is run by a

Speaker:

religious cult that's not even a cult.

Speaker:

It's a religion. It's flat out religion. Who new.

Speaker:

Yeah. There's some ancient evil that that's. That's. That gives

Speaker:

Province centers magic.

Speaker:

Not prom. Yeah. Provincetown. Provincetown. Yeah. Yeah. It's often.

Speaker:

Yeah. I often mistake the thing is there. For Providence and

Speaker:

it's death drop takes. Place in Providence, I think. Aren't they

Speaker:

coming from Providence at the. At this top of this movie?

Speaker:

They are. They are.

Speaker:

What I like since Providence is it's game back at all tone like

Speaker:

this one actually in its own way shits on the other like don't

Speaker:

go there. They're run by devil people.

Speaker:

Come see us. We're cool.

Speaker:

But we're cool slashers. We have cool slashers. I would almost

Speaker:

blew the ending for you. But I'm not going to do. That's okay.

Speaker:

The other thing that this movie reminded of and like I said

Speaker:

I had to form my own initially had to form my own idea of what's

Speaker:

going on here is that. Did you read Clive Barker's Midnight Meat

Speaker:

Train? No, but I've seen the movie. I haven't read it. No. Yeah.

Speaker:

Something that's missing from the movie. The opening paragraph

Speaker:

of Midnight Me Train basically says that there are certain places

Speaker:

in the world, cities that are magic. They've always been magic.

Speaker:

And the reason why they've always been magic is because the

Speaker:

ancients, that's where the ancients dwelled. The old gods lived

Speaker:

like New York. It's magic. It will always be magic. That's where

Speaker:

they dwell. The thing is they're still here. They're old and

Speaker:

firm now and they need to be fed. Yeah. You want to keep the magic

Speaker:

going, you gotta feed us. So in my mind, Saint Jogo is kind of

Speaker:

the thing I came up with. It said, do my bidding and I will make

Speaker:

a paradise for your people. You will want for nothing. Just feed

Speaker:

me over the winter. Feed me some pretty boys.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

And you've talked about looking up what Saint Drogo meant.

Speaker:

Saint Drogo apparently was the patron saint of ugly people. Of ugly

Speaker:

people and unattractive people. Yes. Also of coffee and shepherds.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah. Shepherd's is official coffee. Nobody knows what

Speaker:

that came from. But the ugly people one I think is fascinating

Speaker:

too, because now I'm also thinking Drogo. The word drogo in

Speaker:

Spanish slang means drug addict. Drogo. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

Which.

Speaker:

He's a pusher. Saint Drogo is a pusher. What am I talking about?

Speaker:

What is this drug they're sniffing?

Speaker:

What is this drug? It's not cocaine.

Speaker:

What is it down? It is ground teeth. Oh, that all says. I mean,

Speaker:

teeth in movies. The teeth seen in this movie or the teeth monster

Speaker:

in this film. I mean, you know, I don't know if you watch Channel

Speaker:

Zero, but there was a tooth monster in that, in that show. Anything

Speaker:

like that. Chattering teeth or. It just, it gets them. It just,

Speaker:

it just really like gets under my skin. The teeth get under my skin,

Speaker:

Patrick.

Speaker:

Especially teeth that come off some weird tumor that's under his

Speaker:

arm. It's like this.

Speaker:

It's like this cancerous organ that's made of teeth.

Speaker:

They pull, they grind up and they snort it.

Speaker:

And that's.

Speaker:

That's communion. He says, take it. My.

Speaker:

He offers like, this is my body. It's so smart. These guys are

Speaker:

so smart because they're creating this b. They're creating

Speaker:

this backstory that is mythic and biblical, but also it has all

Speaker:

these references to modern gay culture. Right. The abuse of drugs

Speaker:

addiction is a big part of this film. Like, like a lot of these.

Speaker:

It felt a little bit like, get out. Right. Like these older men

Speaker:

are trying to get the spirits of these younger men so they can

Speaker:

stay young. They need a sacrifice. And you know, gay culture

Speaker:

is obsessed with looking young, with looking hot. So the two

Speaker:

worlds really, really converge. And not in a heavy handed

Speaker:

way. You're like, oh, yeah, I can get the that. But, but, but that's

Speaker:

what I loved about the writing and, and the production of that,

Speaker:

is that those two worlds.

Speaker:

I love the visual storytelling I mentioned at the party. One of

Speaker:

these.

Speaker:

I love that.

Speaker:

Something that Dan just touched on.

Speaker:

Now when we first get to the.

Speaker:

Party and we're seeing the first floor.

Speaker:

Of the party, because there's many, there's many levels to this

Speaker:

party, literally and figuratively. There are many levels

Speaker:

to this party. The first one, I'm like, everybody's into talks.

Speaker:

Everybody's over 40. Everybody's bald. Yes. There's a

Speaker:

certain demographic. It's me. I would be on the first Floor.

Speaker:

Hi, everybody.

Speaker:

I'm a. I'm a first floor floor gay. But that means it would set

Speaker:

my alarm bells up. I'm like, oh, yeah.

Speaker:

Oh, it's the a.

Speaker:

It's the toxic ays. Which also. This is about. This is like

Speaker:

the. When you have a beautiful gay community and the toxic community,

Speaker:

the toxic awful people come in and take it over and ruin it. That's.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Which we also touch on in death.

Speaker:

Drop the whole. About the. Because we touched on the whole gentrification

Speaker:

of Provincetown. Like we built this beautiful community. Now straight

Speaker:

people are taking it from us.

Speaker:

It's the same thing.

Speaker:

It's like that we have this. We built the world. And now these

Speaker:

people are here because of that thing over there.

Speaker:

Every.

Speaker:

And going back to the whole drug reference thing, it reminded

Speaker:

me of like, almost like a Harvey Weinstein thing. Or like you

Speaker:

see the situations in gay culture where you have some old creepy

Speaker:

gay dude with tons of money who has the drugs, who has this bevy

Speaker:

of boys. Most beautiful boys. Everybody knows him. Everybody loves

Speaker:

him. Yeah. Because he always has the drugs on it. But this is.

Speaker:

That's exactly. They all love Saint Drogo because they're all addicted

Speaker:

to that. To that drug. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't get them high, gives

Speaker:

them power. It gives them money. It gives them respectability.

Speaker:

It makes you one of the. One of the chosen. I. And I love this

Speaker:

idea that it eats up young boys. Like, it takes it. It. Because

Speaker:

that it. I mean, it does happen in towns like this where there

Speaker:

are like. Not to get too serious. But.

Speaker:

No, it's hard. It's what we do here.

Speaker:

Go in. In the winter on places like Nantucket and places like Provincetown.

Speaker:

The overdoses go up. Deaths from overdoses go up. Deaths from

Speaker:

suicide go up. So it just rang really true that that's that aspect

Speaker:

of it, like that of that idea of eating up these young gay men

Speaker:

who are addicts and who. So it just. Yeah, it was very sad at the

Speaker:

same time. And what I was saying about the levels, like, I

Speaker:

don't let. Like you had the people in the first floor like these

Speaker:

clearly with the A list. But then up there with the working.

Speaker:

Then you had the priests.

Speaker:

You had the high priests on the next floor. All the.

Speaker:

All the people who ropes who were.

Speaker:

Giving me don't look now vibes when you seeing the rope. Rope. People

Speaker:

popping up around town in certain visions. Like I now we're

Speaker:

in do look now territory. We're pulling from that now too.

Speaker:

So many smart things. Yeah. Suspiria vibes too. Suspiria vibes,

Speaker:

yes, Suspiria vibes as well. It's like a coven of something that

Speaker:

yeah, controls people. All this orgy stuff in here was so well

Speaker:

shot because it felt hot but also horrifying at the same time.

Speaker:

And never clearly staged. Clearly massively art directed.

Speaker:

Like everything is.

Speaker:

Is precise and, and, and for. Done for a reason, yet never felt

Speaker:

artificial. Like I was saying, I've just seen so many thinking of

Speaker:

a movie that I just sat there. I don't want to say the name of it,

Speaker:

but it's a gay film that had lots of these orgy seeds and they

Speaker:

just felt dumb. Yeah. Fake. Like you're just doing.

Speaker:

It's like gay theater.

Speaker:

Like we're just gonna have some like naked people in a shitty

Speaker:

play. You know, we got guys with big dicks to get you in the

Speaker:

door. Right, right. And then the play's like eh. But this was

Speaker:

not that. It is true. The art direction and the cinematography

Speaker:

in this are great. I'm trying to pull up the cinematographer's

Speaker:

name because I just felt like Kevin Bowden. I'm just taking that

Speaker:

off of IMDb everybody. Like the editing, I don't know, it just

Speaker:

all seemed again, going back to the budget that they had. It just.

Speaker:

Everyone was working their A game. It just looks. It's a great

Speaker:

looking film and that, that just. That just helps. We've all

Speaker:

seen low budget films where one element, the sound, the cinematography

Speaker:

is off and it just sort of. And it ruins the whole experience.

Speaker:

And in this film it's all. Everyone is working at their A game.

Speaker:

So tell your friends that, tell the guys that I. That I just.

Speaker:

Yeah, thought hire Dan for your next movie. Oh, tell them that

Speaker:

too. Tell them I love Providence and I love. I love Providence.

Speaker:

I'll go to Providence in a hobby Heartbeat. It just did. You

Speaker:

told him yourself. As I mentioned in the first part of the

Speaker:

session, one of my favorite.

Speaker:

Things about this movie was trying to figure out who in this

Speaker:

movie played whom in Death Drop.

Speaker:

Gorgeous.

Speaker:

And the person who was really giving me trouble was Eric, the actor

Speaker:

Matthew Pidge. And the funny thing is I had a pen.

Speaker:

Completely wrong character.

Speaker:

I forget which one it was, but I had it completely wrong. Until

Speaker:

all of a sudden we're doing the scene in the big finale where

Speaker:

we finally find that Eric is not a real friend, that he is working.

Speaker:

With the other side, that he's 100% evil.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

And it's when Caleb is walking through the. The orgy scene. And

Speaker:

he just stumbles upon Eric and he's splayed out across that couch

Speaker:

and he just says, oh, you made it. I went, oh, there she is. That's

Speaker:

Janet Fitness. Oh, I didn't know what to be. So long. It was

Speaker:

Janet all the time.

Speaker:

Yeah, but the biblical stuff carries too. Like even the names.

Speaker:

The main guys like Caleb Biblical explored. His whole thing

Speaker:

was he explored the promised land before Moses got there. And

Speaker:

he spends the whole movie exploring the province land. The

Speaker:

promised land of province. Sam. Yeah, Isaac, Right. Yes.

Speaker:

They need to pull Rowan Morrison with this too, because it

Speaker:

turns out Isaac's.

Speaker:

Alive the whole time. He was never sacrificed on the beach.

Speaker:

And of course, Isaac in the Bible is supposed to be sacrificed

Speaker:

to his God. Right. But he's saved by a last minute switcheroo.

Speaker:

And that's exactly what happens here.

Speaker:

That's right.

Speaker:

There's a point where Saint Dro's.

Speaker:

Like I was telling Caleb, I know you. I like you. I've watched

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

This is.

Speaker:

This had been set in motion for a long time.

Speaker:

And it kind of feels like was.

Speaker:

Isaac get to live now? Because he called in Caleb just like the

Speaker:

Wicker Man. So. Yeah, it just makes you feel like this was destined

Speaker:

to happen. He. Caleb could not get away from this. From this destiny.

Speaker:

And that's so sad because he had no power over this. Like this

Speaker:

was gonna happen. He was drawn here. He was tricked to come here.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Hold on. I know just the person.

Speaker:

He's stubborn as a mule. Yeah. And he wants me. So I'm gonna get

Speaker:

him to come and he. You won't have to kill me. You can have him.

Speaker:

He's much tastier than I am.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

Oh, boy, do they have him. They carve that to pieces. It's.

Speaker:

It's. It's. Oh, my God. And just the betrayal of Adrian just

Speaker:

standing there watching. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's gone. And that sad

Speaker:

shot at the end when what's his face, the antique owner shop,

Speaker:

is driving off, and we just see Eric and. And Adrian just walking

Speaker:

on the side of the road. And you're just thinking, Adrian's to

Speaker:

be here forever now. Yeah, he's going to be. Yeah, he's home.

Speaker:

He's home. He's home. Yeah, he's fine. He's fine. You just got

Speaker:

to get to the winners. You're one of us now. You're not one of

Speaker:

them. Yeah, I love a down. I love a downer ending movie. And this

Speaker:

one has a downer ending. Yeah, well, it depends for who I mean.

Speaker:

Everyone else got happy and just Caleb, you know, he could have

Speaker:

stopped again. He could have stopped it at any time. Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But he winds up being the sacrifice and all because he won't

Speaker:

even.

Speaker:

Even. Even at the very end. He had the opportunity. St. Drogo gave

Speaker:

him the opportunity.

Speaker:

All you got to do is snort this. Yeah. Just take. Just p. No

Speaker:

snort. And we don't have to do it. No sorry. No. No begging, no

Speaker:

bargaining. No sorry. We're down. Good stuff. All right. I had

Speaker:

to forgive a lot in Death Drop. Gorgeous.

Speaker:

But I also know it was their.

Speaker:

First film, and it feels like a first film, and they was. That

Speaker:

was an incredibly ambitious film. Yeah. The amount of crowds.

Speaker:

Because you know how hard it is to shoot a crowd scene, you know.

Speaker:

You know, hardest to shoot a dancing.

Speaker:

Scene, like a club scene.

Speaker:

The long nights are expensive, but it's hard to do. And they're

Speaker:

in. They were in a major city. I mean, Providence, Rhode island,

Speaker:

is a small city, but it's still a city. Yeah. Right. And so

Speaker:

corralling all that stuff. Yeah. So many moving parts of that

Speaker:

story.

Speaker:

So many locations and so many.

Speaker:

There is so much that was so ambitious. So some of the things

Speaker:

aren't great. And I let that slide. Said, okay, that's fine, I'll

Speaker:

let it go.

Speaker:

It's not a big deal. Because ultimately, at the end of the.

Speaker:

Day, it would turn out to be a great film. And I. At the end, I

Speaker:

was shocked and surprised and said I didn't not expect to be here

Speaker:

when this is over.

Speaker:

But this. You're right.

Speaker:

You don't. It doesn't feel low budget. No, I. And I've heard people,

Speaker:

some people criticize the acting. I say they. Everybody feels

Speaker:

so organic with each other.

Speaker:

It doesn't feel like acting.

Speaker:

Which is fine to me. Yeah. I mean, these guys know each other.

Speaker:

They're friends, they. They're. They work together for a

Speaker:

while. It seems like in real life they know each other. The chemistry

Speaker:

is already there. They have a comfortableness on screen. Listen,

Speaker:

I could quibble a little bit about some of the acting. Yeah, of

Speaker:

course. But after, you know, because I'm an actor myself and I'm

Speaker:

going to be super critical of other actors. That always happens.

Speaker:

Yeah. But I feel like this movie wrapped me in its. In its mood

Speaker:

and atmosphere, and I just forgave a lot of that stuff. A lot

Speaker:

of that stuff just went away. So I didn't. Yeah. In the end. In

Speaker:

the end, I bought it it all. And thank you for introducing this

Speaker:

film to me and These filmmakers, because I now they will

Speaker:

be on my radar. You're welcome. You're welcome. Yeah.

Speaker:

And you're welcome, boys. He's amazing. He's amazing.

Speaker:

Cast him in something, please. Cast him in things.

Speaker:

I've directed him.

Speaker:

He's amazing. Oh, my God. You did. That's right, I did. Wow. Yeah,

Speaker:

we won a prize. Thank you very much. See me in action. Audition

Speaker:

me.

Speaker:

And then I said, all right. Thank you, Dan, for joining me.

Speaker:

This is very good to hang out out again. It was so nice to see

Speaker:

you, Patrick. Thank you for the invite and especially for this

Speaker:

movie. For. For introducing me to. To these guys. The second I saw

Speaker:

it when. When at the. On the film festival, Circus said, this

Speaker:

is one for down. This is this. And I was not gonna have anybody

Speaker:

else. We had such trouble. We had such trouble booking this. So

Speaker:

many things happened. So many things happened to keep this from

Speaker:

happening, but it finally happened. I'm happy. What did I want

Speaker:

to say? Oh, I also also want to get you back on the plane back

Speaker:

to the. Back on the what? The plane back to the 70s. Oh, okay.

Speaker:

Those episodes where I talk about 70s movies are now going to

Speaker:

be their own podcast. Okay. And I finally saw Bad Ronald and

Speaker:

I said, this is a Dan to make us movie. I've never seen it, Dan.

Speaker:

It's got that one, but two Aislebacher sisters in it. Oh, my.

Speaker:

Lisa and another Aislebacher playing sisters. It's really good.

Speaker:

Oh, my gosh. You know how much I like Lisa Eilbacher. I thought

Speaker:

that's what I said.

Speaker:

Listen, it's got two a.

Speaker:

From the same one is Bad Ronald. The one with the. Who's the

Speaker:

actor?

Speaker:

Was.

Speaker:

It was also brothers. They were in a lot of 70s and 80s. No.

Speaker:

Am I wrong? I'm thinking of somebody else. There might have been.

Speaker:

There was a lot of. There was a big family that moves in this house

Speaker:

with lots of kid actors in it. I don't know. Possibly. But no, it

Speaker:

was the wall. The one wall person. Okay. The walls. Yeah. All

Speaker:

right. Yeah. I've never seen it. I have.

Speaker:

I have.

Speaker:

We'll have to fix that down the road. All right. Okay. After

Speaker:

you're done with your thing at the public and after you do. But

Speaker:

before you.

Speaker:

After you do the thing at the.

Speaker:

Public, but after you do their next movie. All right. Somewhere

Speaker:

in there, we'll do a Bad Ronald episode. All right. Thank

Speaker:

you, Dan. All right, we're going to wrap this.

Speaker:

Up and also want to say a reminder to you to please buy St.

Speaker:

Drogo on Blu Ray.

Speaker:

The information is down in the show. Show notes head on over to

Speaker:

monster makeup llc.com. It's $25. It's totally worth it.

Speaker:

You've heard the whole movie.

Speaker:

Now, if we haven't convinced you, I don't know what else we could

Speaker:

possibly do.

Speaker:

If you want an original story that's.

Speaker:

Beautifully shot, that's going to get under your skin and make it

Speaker:

crawl, then you've got one right here. What are you waiting

Speaker:

Speaker:

about this little mini masterpiece, and you need to see

Speaker:

Speaker:

I'm not going to say it again. Everybody stay safe. Stay healthy.

Speaker:

I'll see you next time.

Speaker:

I'll see you on Damian Lewis or maybe in a plane on a cave from

Speaker:
